Job Title: Optical Modeling Engineer

Locations: Remote, USA

Duration: 12 Months Contract on W2 (Possible Extension)

Our client's Team is looking for an Optical Modeling Engineer to develop and validate optical models for an end-to-end camera simulation pipeline that consists of image sensors, optics, and imaging algorithms.

Must-Have HARD Skills

• Experience using design software like Zemax and Code V

Nice-to-have Skills:

• Experiences in camera calibration and modeling of imaging systems
• Hands-on experience in the development of lab setups for camera system performance study
• Image quality evaluation metrics like MTF/SNR.

Responsibilities

• Develop and validate optical models as part of an imaging simulation pipeline to enable novel camera HW explorations, data generation, and product architecture validation.
• Partner with the internal optics and camera team to understand modeling requirements and to improve fidelity and efficiency.
• Liaison with software partners to understand their implementations, and limitations and find solutions.
• Collaborate with developers of other pipeline components such as graphics renderer and sensor model to understand different implementation tradeoffs and optimize for overall performance.
• Experiment and data collection to validate modeling accuracy
• Investigate the latest imaging modeling technologies to enable realistic simulation of real camera behaviors
• Research and develop novel calibration and metrology technologies.

Qualifications

• Imaging optics design and optimization experience
• This position requires hands-on development in programmatically modeling complex lens behaviors.
• Scripting experience with programming languages like Python or MATLAB is a must.
• Expertise in using software like Code V or Zemax for lens design or ray tracing.
• Preferably with knowledge on how ray tracing is implemented in these software's.
• Knowledge of the image formation process (spectrum, optics/aberrations, PSF, sensor noise, Fourier theory, sampling/aliasing) is needed to successfully model and simulate complex imaging phenomena.
• Ability to work with minimal direction and manage a project independently from start to finish.

Good to have

• Experience developing and implementing optics design and ray tracing software like Code V and Zemax.
• Experience in modeling imaging systems, calibration, and metrology
• Experience in image quality testing of camera systems and familiarity with image quality metrics and analysis (MTF/SNR).
• Familiar with image sensor and image processing algorithms
