Optical Metrology Engineer, Optical Metrology

Join Amazon Lab126, a dynamic research and development company known for designing cutting-edge consumer electronics such as Kindle, Fire tablets, Fire TV, and Amazon Echo. We're seeking a skilled Display Optical Metrology Engineer to lead measurement, test, and evaluation of optical components, systems, and algorithms throughout Amazon's product development process. In this role, you'll collaborate with a diverse team to drive the conception, design, and optimization of display components, quantifying and validating high quality end user experiences. You must be responsive, flexible, and able to succeed within an open collaborative peer environment.

Key job responsibilities:

  1. You will guide the architecture, design, development, qualification, and implementation of optical measurement solutions for product components and devices, such as displays, light sources, LEDs, and diffusers.
  2. Able to carry out fundamental technology investigations of complex optical modules to define internal and external customer specifications for mass production.
  3. Design and develop optical metrology systems for characterizing display technologies, defining lab and in-line workflows and standard operating procedures.
  4. Deploy data mining and analysis tools to correlate performance metrics with end user experience, providing insights to guide the engineering team’s development and product quality control.
  5. Utilize expertise in algorithm design, advanced machine learning, and programming of electro-optical hardware to drive innovation in display technology.
  6. Use a deep understanding of Customer Experience (CX) and User Experience (UX) principles to design experiments and conduct user studies for component and design qualification.
  7. Apply advanced color science principles to simulate and model optical performance, demonstrating accurate representations through simulation by empirical validation.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

- Experience with prototyping and implementation
- 4+ years of working in mechanical engineering or equivalent experience
- Advanced Degree (MS, PhD) in Optical Engineering, Optical Sciences, Physics, Electrical Engineering or related field
- Skilled background in color science and photometry, including hands-on experience with development, calibration, and test of optical metrology instrumentation.
- Able to conduct gauge repeatability and reproducibility (GR&R) studies to ensure the accuracy and precision of advanced measurement systems.
- 3+ years of experience in the display industry of delivering products with expertise in display characterization.
- Proficiency in programming for test automation and data analysis using languages such as LabVIEW, MATLAB, Python, C#, C++, etc.
- Excellent analytical skills, hands-on problem-solving abilities, and proficiency in hardware testing and troubleshooting.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

- Knowledge of SolidWorks simulation or Ansys Finite Element analysis tools
- Experience in the design of complex mechanical products and equipment at volume
- Strong background in machine vision systems and experience with computer vision, image processing, and machine learning.
- Experience in display system bring-up, debug, fault detection, root cause analysis, and failure analysis.
- Demonstrated expertise in developing hardware test solutions, including collaboration with internal and third-party vendors, particularly in areas such as image processing, computer vision, and optical test & calibration automation.
- Good understanding of EPD/OLED/LCD panel design, front-of-screen quality definition, display materials and processing, and opto-electrical testing.
