Job summary

Rochester Optical is seeking an Optical Lab Technician in Rochester, NY to perform production tasks for prescription eyewear. You will ensure quality and safety procedures are followed across operations.

The role requires handling lenses, preparing components, and operating various machines to produce finished eyewear while maintaining high accuracy and efficiency.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to read and write English, preferred.
  • Experience handling optics and some knowledge of vacuum coating systems, a plus.
  • Experience with clean room, a plus.
  • Lab, warehouse or manufacturing experience highly preferred.
  • Prior lensometry experience, preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Receive orders and prepare them for processing
  • Accurately and efficiently select and prepare components to fulfill customer orders
  • Stock incoming items in an organized manner
  • Perform quarterly cycle counts on lens and frame inventory
  • Prep lenses for the production line using equipment provided
  • Operate blocking machine to attach lens to block with liquid alloy; refill machine with alloy as needed
  • Learn and operate machinery to polish and prep lenses for the next stage
  • Wash lenses with attention to detail and care, ensuring damage is not caused during the process
  • Use machinery and tools to coat lenses
  • Clean and maintain the machines thoroughly to ensure lenses will not be damaged
  • Use machinery and tools to mount finished lenses in metal, plastic, or rimless frames
  • Use a lensometer and visual methods to inspect lens attributes against requirements
  • Operate the edging machine

Optical Lab Technician

Full Time Manual Labor Rochester, NY, US

Salary Range: $18.00 To $24.00 Hourly

Rochester Optical was established in Rochester, New York in 1932. At the time, the ownersaw a growing need for protective tactical eyewear for the Armed Forces, aircraft pilots, and police officers. Later, Rochester Optical became one of the country's few military prescription glasses frame manufacturersand supplied the Army and the Air Force with combat-ready ballistic eyewear for soldiers. After WWII, the tactical eyewear company expanded its services to include creating and selling prescription eyeglasses for the public. Rochester Optical quickly became one of the best glass frames and prescription eyeglass manufacturers in the area, producing many popular glass frame styles of the time with polarized tints.

Since then, Rochester Optical has added a large, full-functioning optical lab, a wholesale business line, and astock lens facility and created wearable device solutions using augmented reality technology.

Position Summary:

The Optical Lab Technician performs various production tasks for manufacturing prescription eyewear. Each technician is responsible for the quality and quantity of the work performed and is expected to understand and practice proper quality and safety procedures for every operation.

Essential Job Functions:
  • Receive orders and prepare them for processing
  • Accurately and efficiently select and prepare components to fulfill customer orders
  • Stock incoming items in an organized manner
  • Perform quarterly cycle counts on lens and frame inventory
  • Prep lenses for the production line using equipment provided

Skills & Abilities:
  • Ability to handle repetitive tasks while maintaining consistency, accuracy and efficiency
  • Computer skills include MS Office, database navigation and ability to learn industry specific software, preferred
  • Excellent organization, time-management, problem-solving, interpersonal and communication skills
  • Exceptional accuracy and attention to detail; good hand-eye coordination
  • Ability to interpret Rx work ticket
  • Quality Assurance experience, preferred
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team; to work well under pressure in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • Ability to take direction
Education & Experience:
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Ability to read and write English, preferred

Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time and lift or move up to 50lbs
  • Must have good hand dexterity and ability to work with small hand tools
  • Requires the ability to work with small hand tools
  • Frequent bending and stooping
  • Specific vision abilities required for this job include close vision and color

Compensation is commensurate with experience.
