Henry Ford Health is seeking a meticulous Optical Lab Technician for the OptimEyes finishing line in Michigan. You will master frames, lenses, and precision equipment to produce high-quality eyewear that enhances customers' vision and life.

Responsibilities include mounting lenses, blocking, edging, tinting, and performing repairs, while following 6S and process instructions to maintain safety and efficiency.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • Two years of optical lab experience preferred.
  • Requires basic computer skills to read and execute machine commands on screens.
  • Requires dexterity to handle small tools and parts.
  • Must understand verbal and/or written instructions.

  • Mount lenses and trace frames across metal, semi-rimless, and plastic styles.
  • Operate semi-automatic finish blockers and edging equipment with precision.
  • Perform eyeglass repairs including screws and eye wire replacement.
  • Follow detailed process instructions and support 6S in the workspace.

Job Description
GENERAL SUMMARY:

Join our Henry Ford OptimEyes finishing line team and master the precision craft of optical manufacturing. In this role, you'll develop expertise across the complete eyeglass production process, working with advanced equipment and quality standards to deliver finished eyewear that impacts our customers' vision and quality of life.

Principal Duties And Responsibilities
Lens Mounting & Frame Processing:
  • Master the art of tracing frames and mounting lenses across metal, semi-rimless, and plastic frame styles
  • Develop proficiency in lens blocking and deblocking for the surfacing line, ensuring precision at every step
  • Efficiently manage job tray movement throughout the production line to maintain workflow momentum
Advanced Technical Operations
  • Operate and master semi-automatic finish blockers and edging equipment, including error correction
  • Execute lens tinting processes following established protocols to expand your technical skill set
  • Utilize lensometers with precision to verify lens specifications and quality standards
  • Employ arc lamp technology to identify and flag cosmetic defects, contributing to quality assurance
  • Mark progressive lenses accurately using witness engravings for proper identification
Quality & Repair Expertise
  • Perform essential eyeglass repairs including screw and eye wire replacement, lens resizing, and frame adjustments
  • Assemble and repair specialized drill mount eyewear, expanding your technical capabilities
  • Progress toward advanced frame repair skills including temple end replacement, precision adjustments, and equipment calibration
Operational Excellence
  • Consistently follow detailed process instructions - both written and verbal to maintain production standards
  • Champion 6S principles throughout your work area, contributing to a clean, organized, and efficient workspace
  • Support team objectives and take on additional responsibilities as directed by management
Qualifications
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
  • High School diploma or G.E.D. required.
  • Two (2) years of experience in an Optical lab preferred.
  • Requires basic computer skills, to include reading and executing machine commands on screens.
  • Requires dexterity to handle small tools and parts (such as screwdrivers and frame screws).
  • Requires the ability to understand verbal and/or written instructions.
  • Must have good communication skills.
  • Requires the ability to work independently as needed.
  • Can be trained to perform the job responsibilities.

Must practice the customer skills as provided through on-going training and in-services.

Physical Demands/Working Conditions
  • Requires the ability to stand, bend, and lift up to 20 lbs. for an entire shift
