Job summary

Nokia is seeking an Optical DWDM Transmission SDVT engineer to join our advanced DWDM optical transmission lab in New Jersey. You will characterize DWDM transmission with high speed transponders for long-haul and metro networks, with potential subsea cable work, commissioning and field support.

Role involves planning tests, developing link engineering rules, analyzing results, setting up test beds, and collaborating with customers.

Qualifications

  • MS in EE or Physics or equivalent work experience.
  • 6+ years of related optical/CDMA/DWDM engineering experience.
  • Experience using AI for programming, data analysis and test plan development.
  • Understanding of subsea optical cable design is a plus.
  • Experience with high speed optical transmission and DWDM system testing.
  • Familiarity with Nokia optical products is a plus.
  • Experience with optical transmission test equipment and scripting tools.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and execute transmission tests on DWDM line systems.
  • Develop and model link engineering rules.
  • Analyze results and perform experimental transmission tests informing architecture decisions.
  • Set up and maintain optical test beds.
  • Characterize and accept customer links; interface with customers and perform demos.
  • Operate and revise test automation software (LabVIEW, HP VEE, Visual Basic, Python) and AI tools.
  • Engage in extensive hands-on lab work and document results.
  • Present results to customers and colleagues.

Our team is growing our Optical Hardware Integration and DWDM transmission capacity and as such is seeking a Optical DWDM Transmission SDVT engineer to work in our cutting edge DWDM optical transmission lab, characterizing DWDM transmission with high speed optical transponders in long-haul and metro optical networks. Work also could include subsea cable characterisation, commissioning, integration, and field support.

How You Will Contribute And What You Will Learn
  • Planning and execution of transmission tests on DWDM line systems
  • Development and modelling of link engineering rules
  • Analyze results and perform experimental transmission tests that drive Architecture and System Engineering decisions
  • Setup and maintenance of optical test beds
  • Work may include characterizing and acceptance test of customer links
  • Interface with customers, perform customer demos
  • Operation and revision of test automation software (LabVIEW, HP VEE, Visual Basic, Python) and AI tools
  • Extensive hands‑on lab work
  • Documentation of test results
  • Presenting and articulating results to customers and colleagues
Key Skills And Experience
  • Minimum MS in EE or Physics or equivalent work experience in optical or electrical engineering
  • Minimun 6 years of related experience
  • Experience in the use of AI for programming, data analysis and test plan development
  • An understanding of subsea optical cable design is a plus.
  • Experience and expertise in high speed optical transmission
  • Experience in DWDM system design, architecture, and testing
  • Practical experience in development and modelling of link engineering rules and optical network characteristics
  • Familiarity with Nokia optical products is a plus
  • Experience with optical transmission test equipment including Optical Spectrum Analyzers, Bit Error Rate test sets, optical power meters, and high-speed scopes
  • Familiarity with test automation and scripting software including Python, LabVIEW, Visual Basic and HP VEE
  • Familiarity with optical simulation tools
