Job summary

AEG is seeking an Optical Consultant to support optometrists in delivering exceptional patient care and education. You will perform preliminary evaluations, interview patients, and coordinate referrals in a fast-paced clinic.

You will maintain records in EHR, assist with testing and clerical tasks, and help manage daily schedules. Excellent communication and teamwork are essential in this role.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or GED required.
• Excellent attention to detail and ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
• PC skills include MS Office, Windows and word processing.
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team.
• Excellent verbal and written communication with coworkers and patients.

Responsibilities

• Perform preliminary patient evaluations prior to exams (dilation, topicals, diagnostics assim.)
• Interview patients to identify issues before optometrist visit
• Schedule referrals and manage paperwork as needed
• Maintain patient records in EHR and ensure HIPAA compliance
• Respond to patient inquiries regarding medications and care
• Assist with diagnostic testing using ophthalmic equipment
• Assist with clerical duties and verify CPT codes and billing
• Support daily schedule management and patient recall outreach
• Handle contact lens insertion/removal training and inventory
• Perform end-of-day duties and maintain work area organization
• Assist as a scribe or support role for the optometrist
• Contribute to other duties as assigned by practice

About the role

At AEG, we believe great patient experiences begin with great teams. As an Optical Consultant, you'll work alongside the Optometrists to support all aspects of patient care and education, ensuring that patients receive exceptional care.

• Perform preliminary evaluations of patients prior to exam by the Optometrist, such as dilation, topicals, diagnostic medications, Optomap, auto reflector, visual acuity, etc.
• Performs verbal interview with patient prior to visit with Optometrist to determine medical issues and reasons for their visit to provide details to Optometrist.
• May be required to schedule referral appointments with Ophthalmologists, Diagnostic follow-up visits, and other specialty referrals, and complete paperwork.
• Records and maintains patient records / files in compliance with company, federal, and state policies (HIPAA).
• Responds to patient telephone inquiries regarding medication, treatment, problems referring to the Optometrist as necessary.
• May be required to perform diagnostic testing using specialty equipment (OCT, Visual Field, Pachymetry, Retinal Camera. Etc.).
• Documents medical findings and communication between Optometrist and patient in Electronic Health Records(EHR) and assist with clerical duties related to medical documentation (participating practices only). Checking CPT codes, billings for post op, office visit etc.
• Ensures that maximum schedule utilization occurs through pre-appointment confirmation, daily appointment confirmation, contacting patients from recall listings, contacting no-shows or canceled patients to reschedule.
• Performs contact lens insertion and removal classes (I&R) and manages the contact lens trial inventory, check-in and take contact lens orders in person or by phone.
• Performs end-of-day responsibilities to include opti-schedule wrap-up, end-of-day checklist, etc.
• Cleans and organizes frame boards, displays, mirrors, work bench, office area, maintaining overall cleanliness and visual appeal of the practice.
• May be asked to act as a scribe for the Optometrist or perform refractions.
• Performs other duties within the Practice as requested.
