Job summary

AEG Vision in Harwich, MA is seeking an Optical Consultant to support Optometrists and patient care. You’ll perform preliminary evaluations before exams, assist with scheduling referrals, and maintain patient records in EHR systems.

The role also involves verifying CPT codes, conducting contact lens instruction, and helping with day-end duties while upholding HIPAA compliance and delivering exceptional patient experiences.

Qualifications

  • Experience supporting optometrists and patient education.
  • Familiarity with HIPAA and patient records handling.
  • Ability to perform preliminary evaluations before exams.
  • Experience with scheduling referrals to ophthalmology or other specialists.
  • Proficiency with Electronic Health Records (EHR).

Responsibilities

  • Perform preliminary evaluations of patients prior to exam by the Optometrist, such as dilation, topicals, diagnostic medications, Optomap, auto reflector, visual acuity, etc.
  • Performs verbal interview with patient prior to visit with Optometrist to determine medical issues and reasons for their visit to provide details to Optometrist.
  • May be required to schedule referral appointments with Ophthalmologists, Diagnostic follow-up visits, and other specialty referrals, and complete paperwork.
  • Records and maintains patient records / files in compliance with company, federal, and state policies (HIPAA).
  • Responds to patient telephone inquiries regarding medication, treatment, problems referring to the Optometrist as necessary.
  • May be required to perform diagnostic testing using specialty equipment (OCT, Visual Field, Pachymetry, Retinal Camera. Etc.).
  • Documents medical findings and communication between Optometrist and patient in Electronic Health Records(EHR) and assist with clerical duties related to medical documentation (participating practices only). Checking CPT codes, billings for post op, office visit etc.
  • Ensures that maximum schedule utilization occurs through pre-appointment confirmation, daily appointment confirmation, contacting patients from recall listings, contacting no-shows or canceled patients to reschedule.
  • Performs contact lens insertion and removal classes (I&R) and manages the contact lens trial inventory, check-in and take contact lens orders in person or by phone.
  • Performs end-of-day responsibilities to include opti-schedule wrap-up, end-of-day checklist, etc.
  • Cleans and organizes frame boards, displays, mirrors, work bench, office area, maintaining overall cleanliness and visual appeal of the practice.
  • May be asked to act as a scribe for the Optometrist or perform refractions.
  • Performs other duties within the Practice as requested.
