Assists in most aspects of drug distribution that do not require the professional judgment of a pharmacist. An Operations Pharmacy Technician I can only perform some aspects of drug distribution and preparation. Technicians function in accordance with standard, written procedures and guidelines under the supervision of a pharmacist.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Technicians registered with the state after June 30, 2014, must be nationally certified within 15 months of hire by completing an approved national certification exam (PTCB or EXCPT).
  3. Must be registered with the state Board of Pharmacy as a Pharmacy Technician trainee upon hire (except Pennsylvania).
  4. If employed in Maryland, national certifications are waived.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

  1. Associates degree OR post-high school education in a science field of study OR graduate of a pharmacy technician training program.

EXPERIENCE:

  1. Six months of pharmacy technician experience.

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The statements described here are intended to describe the general nature of work being performed by people assigned to this position.   1. Prepare unit-dose medications, deliver medications, and manage drug supplies.
  2. Read physician orders/prescriptions and prepare medication for dispensing, including unique dosage forms for pediatric and geriatric patients.
  3. Understand standard pharmaceutical/medical terms, abbreviations, and symbols used in prescribing and dispensing medications.
  4. Communicate with patients or caregivers about medication details and scheduling.
  5. Accurately prepare and deliver controlled substances, maintaining all necessary records.
  6. Manage inventory, replace outdated medications, and replenish supplies.
  7. Prepare non-parenteral medications, including oral solutions/suspensions for pediatric patients.
  8. Label parenteral/Prescription products appropriately.
  9. Perform arithmetic calculations for medication dosages.
  10. Adhere to departmental standards for speed and accuracy.
  11. Prepare and label prepackaged medications and maintain related records.
  12. Maintain inventory and supplies in pharmacy areas.
  13. Answer phone calls and direct them appropriately.
  14. Keep pharmacy and drug storage areas clean and organized.
  15. Follow regulations restricting certain duties to pharmacists, such as receiving oral prescriptions, consulting with prescribers, providing confidential patient information, checking medications, and patient counseling.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to walk, stand, or sit for long periods, lift up to 30 pounds, push up to 50 pounds, and perform dexterity tasks.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Work in a typical pharmacy setting with accommodations for disabilities as needed.
