Job Description

Assists in most aspects of drug distribution that do not require the professional judgment of a pharmacist. An Operations Pharmacy Technician I can only perform some aspects of drug distribution and preparation. Technicians function in accordance with standard, written procedures and guidelines under the supervision of a pharmacist.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Technicians registered with the state after June 30, 2014 must be nationally certified within 15 months of hire by completing an approved national certification exam (PTCB or EXCPT).
  • Must be registered with the state Board of Pharmacy as a Pharmacy Technician trainee upon hire (except Pennsylvania).
  • If employed in Maryland, national certifications are waived.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Associates degree OR post-high school education in a science field OR graduate of a pharmacy technician training program.
  • Six months of pharmacy technician experience.
CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Prepare unit-dose medications, deliver medications, and manage drug supplies.
  2. Read physician orders/prescriptions and prepare medications for dispensing, including unique dosage forms for pediatric and geriatric patients.
  3. Understand standard pharmaceutical/medical terms, abbreviations, and symbols used in prescribing and dispensing medications.
  4. Communicate with patients or caregivers to determine medication needs and scheduling.
  5. Accurately prepare and deliver controlled substances, maintaining all necessary records.
  6. Manage inventory and analyze medication supplies, replacing outdated or depleted medications.
  7. Prepare non-parenteral medications, including oral solutions/suspensions for pediatric patients.
  8. Label parenteral/Prescription products appropriately.
  9. Perform arithmetic calculations for dosage determinations.
  10. Prepare and label prepackaged medications and maintain related records.
  11. Maintain inventory and supplies in pharmacy areas.
  12. Answer telephone calls and direct them appropriately.
  13. Keep pharmacy and drug storage areas clean and orderly.
Restrictions

Only pharmacists can perform duties regulated at state and federal levels, such as receiving oral prescriptions, consulting on prescriptions, providing patient information, checking medications, consulting with patients, and recommending over-the-counter medications.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Walk, stand, or sit for long periods; lift up to 30 pounds; push 50 pounds; dexterity for handling and reaching.
