Job summary

Florida Department of Health in Brevard County seeks an OPS Licensed Practical Nurse for a 6-month pool. You will provide nursing care to students under supervision, administer medications, and assist with mandated health screenings.

The role requires CPR and First Aid certification, a valid driver’s license, and ability to travel within Brevard County. Excellent record-keeping and communication with staff are essential.

Qualifications

OPS Licensed Practical Nurse (Pool – 6 months)

This is a “pool” announcement, and applicants will not be considered after 6 months.

Your Specific Responsibilities

• Provide basic nursing services as allowed by LPN scope of practice to students under the direct and/or indirect supervision of the Senior Community Health Nursing Supervisor.
• Administer first aid, daily medications, and emergency medications to students and/or staff as requested and ordered by a physician, including intermittent clean catheterization, gastrostomy tube feeding, and monitoring blood glucose.
• Organize and assist with state–mandated health screenings such as hearing/vision, scoliosis, and body mass index.
• Maintain a clean health unit/work area and perform periodic inventory of medical supplies.
• Maintain accurate and timely records/documentation of all work performed.
• Establish and maintain good working relationships with all staff members.
• Assist the health screening team with implementing/scheduling all health screenings for school district students in state‑mandated grade levels, collect and input screening data into HMS, and sort and prepare mailings to parents/guardians of students screened.
• Attend School Health in‑services as scheduled, complete mandated training, and submit timesheet, mileage, and daily report in a timely fashion.
• Perform related work as required.
• May be required to work before, during, and/or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency (e.g., special‑needs or Red Cross shelters, disaster responses). The incumbent may have access to records containing Social Security numbers.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Utilization of equipment: Computer (e‑mail, attachments), print, fax, and telephone skills and data entry knowledge.
• Ability to keep accurate records and document utilizing electronic records.
• Ability to work independently.
• Ability to effectively communicate with others through speech and writing.
• Ability to work with children and adolescents.
• Able to respond to emergency situations (running) and lift up to 10–20 lbs of emergency equipment.
• Ability to climb stairs (in the case of a 2‑story school or elevators out).
• Ability to acquire CPR certification and physically perform CPR correctly.
• Ability to assist a student into and out of a wheelchair and to push and maneuver a wheelchair over uneven surfaces for an extended period of time.
• Ability to bend to retrieve documents from a file cabinet or items under a cabinet.

Qualifications

Minimum:

• Must be able to acquire CPR and First Aid prior to onboarding.
• Experience working in a medical setting.
• Must possess a current, valid driver’s license.
• Must have transportation to travel to Brevard Public Schools in Brevard County, FL.
• Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Preferred: Experience working in a pediatric medical setting.
