Job summary

Cayuse Holdings is seeking an Ophthalmic Technician to deliver high‑quality clinical support for military beneficiaries. The role emphasizes advanced diagnostic testing, surgery support, patient flow optimization, and strict adherence to client policies and federal healthcare regulations.

Eligible candidates must have at least 1 year of relevant experience, U.S. citizenship, and current immunizations, with a focus on safety and accuracy in a fast-paced clinical environment.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 1 year of recent, full-time experience as an Ophthalmic Technician.
  • Knowledge of ocular physiology, anatomy, pathology, optics, and refraction principles.
  • Understanding of ophthalmic procedures and instrumentation with competency in testing and refractive surgery support.
  • Familiarity with refractive surgery procedures and tests.
  • Proficiency in clinical diagnostic equipment usage, ophthalmic imaging, and surgical support.
  • Strong competency operating automated systems (e.g., ADS, Essentris, MHS GENESIS).
  • Two letters of recommendation (minimum one from a practicing ophthalmologist).
  • Current certifications and immunizations: Annual Influenza, Varicella, MMR, TDAP, Hepatitis B Series.
  • Baseline ocular exam and medical clearances for laser-use risks.
  • U.S. Citizenship required; pass background checks.

Responsibilities

  • Perform advanced diagnostic ophthalmic tests including distance/near vision and color testing.
  • Assist with ophthalmic, refractive, and minor surgical procedures and pre/post-operative care.
  • Support refractive surgery candidate work-ups and patient care.
  • Coordinate and optimize patient flow for examinations, procedures, and follow-ups.
  • Provide professional patient care with clear communication during procedures.
  • Prepare exam rooms and maintain a clean, stocked work environment.
  • Inspect, prepare, and maintain clinical equipment and instrumentation.
  • Sterilize and set up instruments for surgical and laser procedures.
  • Operate automated systems such as ADS, Essentris, and MHS GENESIS.
  • Perform data collection and entry for surgery patients; ensure confidentiality.
  • Participate in MTf Performance Improvement Program; attend reviews and meetings.
  • Comply with client policies and federal healthcare regulations.
  • Maintain required certifications and training; annual trainings.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Employment in this role is conditional upon successful execution of the contract by the client.

The Work

The Ophthalmic Technician provides high-quality clinical support services in ophthalmic care to military service members, retirees, and dependents. This position is critical to ensuring continuity of care, compliance with client standards, and contributing to the operational readiness of the patient population. The ideal candidate will conduct advanced diagnostic ophthalmic tests, assist with refractive surgery evaluations and procedures, and provide patient care to support the delivery of exceptional ophthalmic services.

Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities
  • Perform advanced diagnostic ophthalmic tests, including but not limited to:
    • Distance and Near Vision Testing
    • Color Testing and Pinhole Vision Testing
    • Lensometry, Autorefraction, Autokeratometry, and Manual Refractions
    • Automated Visual Field Testing and Glare Testing
    • Ophthalmic Photography, Tonometry, Pupilometry, and Corneal Pachymetry
  • Assist with ophthalmic, refractive, and other minor surgical procedures, including pre-operative screenings, patient preparation, and post-procedure support.
  • Support refractive surgery candidate work-ups and contribute to pre- and post-operative patient care.
  • Coordinate and optimize patient flow for examinations, procedures, and follow-ups.
  • Provide professional and empathetic patient care throughout ophthalmic and refractive procedures, ensuring clear communication and patient understanding.
  • Prepare examination rooms and maintain a clean, organized, and fully stocked work environment.
  • Inspect, prepare, and maintain clinical equipment and instrumentation.
  • Sterilize and set up instruments for surgical and laser procedures.
  • Operate and manipulate automated systems including ADS, Essentris, MHS GENESIS, and Clinical Information Systems (CIS).
  • Perform data collection and entry for surgery patients, ensuring accuracy and confidentiality.
  • Actively participate in the Military Treatment Facility’s (MTF) Performance Improvement Program.
  • Attend periodic meetings to review patient care, identify improvements, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Comply with client policies and procedures, employer work practices, and federal healthcare regulations.
  • Maintain required certifications, professional practices, and training, including federal and employer-mandated annual training requirements.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Reports to: Program Manager

Working Conditions
  • Clinical and surgical setting with frequent exposure to infectious diseases.
  • Special attire required, including scrubs, gloves, masks, and eye protection.
  • Requires performing manual procedures, working with sophisticated diagnostic technology, and contributing to a safe and compliant work environment.
  • Services will be provided Monday through Friday between 0700 and 1900 .
  • Shifts will typically be scheduled in 8.5-hour shifts, inclusive of a 30-minute uncompensated lunch break.
  • Frequent bending, reaching, standing, walking, and sitting.
  • Requires sufficient manual dexterity for handling diagnostic and clinical equipment, as well as providing health care services.
  • May involve heavy lifting, pushing, and pulling during routine shifts.
  • Must be physically and mentally able to perform duties extended periods of time.
  • Ability to use a computer and other office productivity tools with sufficient speed to meet the demands of this position.
  • Must be able to establish a productive and professional workspace.
  • Must be able to sit for long periods of time looking at computer screen.
  • May be asked to work a flexible schedule which may include holidays.
  • May be asked to travel for business or professional development purposes.
  • May be asked to work hours outside of normal business hours.
