Overview

The Ophthalmic Technician will contribute to a stable workforce tasked with providing quality health care services to a diverse beneficiary population.

This position performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Mission, Vision, and Core Values of Cayuse

Responsibilities

The Ophthalmic Technician will perform a full range of technical care, special knowledge, skills, and professional capabilities relative to ophthalmic services and refractions at the Laser Center. This position aligns with the core values of promoting a safe and healthy work environment, ensuring employee well-being, and upholding the highest standards of medical care.

  • Perform a full range of technical care, using Government furnished facilities, equipment, and supplies. Caseload includes scheduled and unscheduled requirements for care.
  • Perform a full range diagnostic examinations and provide the quality and timelines of treatment records and reports required to document procedures performed and care provided. The Health Care Provider (HCP) shall refer patients to an optometrist or ophthalmologist for consultative opinions as needed in reference to diagnostics.
  • Provide special knowledge, skills, and professional capabilities relative to ophthalmic services and refractions.
  • Assist in the pre-operative evaluation of surgical patients, including diagnostic tests used to evaluate patients such as corneal topography and Pachymetry.
  • Provide pre-operative services including setting up the operating room, providing appropriate equipment and instruments for ophthalmic surgery cases, and maintaining a sterile environment for surgery. For laser refractive surgery procedures, ensure the laser is operational and assist the surgeon in operating the laser equipment.
  • Provide intra-operative support to the surgeon as a surgical assistant and scrubs assistant.
  • Assist the optometrist and ophthalmologist in all aspects of routine and specialty contact lens care.
  • Provide post-operative support by properly disposing of all contaminated supplies, ensure instruments are cleaned and sterilized, send damaged or broken equipment or instruments for servicing or replacement, and prepare incident reports if indicated for signature by the attending surgeon.
  • Assist in post-operative refractions and diagnostic testing under the guidance of the optometrist or ophthalmologist.
  • Provide and document telephonic assistance to patients as appropriate and in accordance with Military Treatment Facility (MTF) protocols.
  • Attend periodic department meetings to review and evaluate the care and treatment provided to patients.
  • Participate in clinical research as directed by the Director of the Laser Refractive Surgery Center.
  • Provide clinical education and instruction to ophthalmology and optometry students, residents, and Physician Assistant students rotating through the Ophthalmology Services.
  • Maintain professional appearance and personal conduct at all times.
  • Attend meetings as requested.
  • Follow the clients’ policies and procedures.
  • Adhere to employer work practices as described in Cayuse policies.
  • Draft and deliver additional reports as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Minimum of one-year clinical experience, with at least six months of that occurring within the past 12 months.
  • Practical knowledge of surgical equipment, instruments, supplies, and skills sufficient to set up surgical materials and position and drape patients for surgery.
  • Practical knowledge and skills sufficient to recognize and assess deviations from normal conditions, make immediate modifications, and notify Ophthalmologist in charge.
  • Possess knowledge of a wide variety of interrelated assignments and training or work experience sufficient to resolve a range of problems with responsibility for carrying assignments to completion.
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Active Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification. Must maintain BLS certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
  • N95 Respirator Clearance for fit testing and unrestricted wearing must be provided prior to starting work and annually.
  • Tuberculosis screening performed within three months of reporting to the client’s site.
  • Current required immunizations:
    • Tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Tdap) vaccine.
    • Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) vaccine or positive antibody titer.
    • Varicella vaccine or positive antibody titer or diagnosis or verification of a history of varicella disease.
    • Hepatitis B vaccine series or Positive Hepatitis B surface antibody titer.
    • Influenza vaccine (annual).
  • Annual medical clearance at client site.
  • Must be able to pass a background check. May require additional background checks as required by projects and/or clients at any time during employment.
  • Must possess problem-solving skills.
  • Read, write, and speak English well enough to effectively communicate with all parties and other health care providers.
  • Must be able to communicate clearly in person and over the telephone.
  • Exceptional communication skills, both oral and written
  • Ability to respond effectively to customers with a sense of urgency.
  • Proficient in Microsoft and Adobe toolsets, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Acrobat, etc.
  • Highly motivated with the ability to handle and manage multiple tasks at any one time.
  • Ability to forge new relationships, individual and teaming in nature.
  • Must be a Self-starter, that can work independently and as part of a team.

Reports to: Program Manager

Working Conditions

  • Professional office environment.
  • Must be able to work on-site at the clients facility in Honolulu, HI.
  • Monday through Friday 7:00am-4:00p), (eight (8) hours per day, plus one (1) unpaid lunch break).
  • May be required to work on a Saturday on an infrequent basis.
  • Must be physically and mentally able to perform duties extended periods of time.
  • Ability to use a computer and other office productivity tools with sufficient speed to meet the demands of this position.
  • Must be able to establish a productive and professional workspace.
  • Must be able to sit for long periods of time looking at computer screen.
  • May be asked to work a flexible schedule which may include holidays.
  • May be asked to travel for business or professional development purposes.
  • May be asked to work hours outside of normal business hours.
