Qualifications

  • High school diploma required; COA or COT preferred.
  • 1 year of experience in ophthalmology with relevant skills.

The Ophthalmology Technician, under close supervision, assists physicians and support personnel with diagnostic tests for eye problems. Responsibilities include performing basic ophthalmic tests such as visual acuity, history taking, tonometry, lensometry, motility, pupil assessment, visual fields, and refraction. Administering dilation or anesthetic drops is also part of the role. Additionally, the technician handles clerical, stocking, and maintenance tasks as needed.

Essential Job Duties/Responsibilities
  1. Coordinate scheduling of patient appointments.
  2. Interview patients and document ocular and medical histories.
  3. Perform routine tests using ophthalmic instruments, including visual acuity, intraocular pressures, motility, visual fields, cover test, pachymetry, and lensometry.
  4. Assist physicians during diagnostic procedures, including instrumentation, sterile preparations, and documentation.
  5. Administer topical medications or diagnostic drugs as required.
  6. Prepare and position patients for tests and procedures.
  7. Assist with patient education regarding treatments.
  8. Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
  9. Prepare exam rooms, inventory equipment, and replenish supplies.

  3. Follow employer work practices and safety policies.
  4. Work effectively within the team.
  5. Manage job stress effectively.
  6. Document work processes as required.
  7. Perform additional duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Accurately perform Goldmann tonometry.
  • Understand ocular and systemic diseases affecting the eye.
  • Knowledge of eye care, hygiene, and ophthalmic drugs.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.
  • Adhere to safety and conduct policies.
  • Efficient multi-tasking abilities.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and other software.
  • Willingness to travel up to 10%.
  • Fluent in English, spoken and written.
Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • At least 1 year of ophthalmologic work experience, including training in listed skills.
  • COA or COT certification preferred; BLS certification required within 90 days.
