Job description

Ophthalmic Technician / Scribe

Overview

Are you a friendly, dependable professional who enjoys helping patients and wants to build new clinical skills in a supportive environment? StaffBuffalo is working with a family-owned eye care practice to hire an Ophthalmic Technician/Scribe, paying $20-$25/hour. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with strong communication and customer service skills who is eager to learn both patient-facing technician duties and real-time medical scribing.

In this dual Ophthalmic Technician/Scribe position, you will prepare patients for appointments, gather and document medical histories, perform preliminary diagnostic testing, support physicians during examinations, and accurately enter findings and treatment information into the electronic medical record. You will be cross-trained to move between technician and scribe responsibilities based on patient volume and provider needs, helping the team maintain an efficient, welcoming patient experience.

This is a full-time, on-site Ophthalmic Technician/Scribe position with a primary location in one of their two Southtowns locations; with occasional coverage at the other Southtowns location as needed. This position is a typical 40-hour work week, with a schedule that does include alternating Saturday mornings and two evenings per week until 7:00 p.m.; but with flexibility of a weekday off when a Saturday is worked. The practice offers hands-on training, cross-training opportunities, schedule flexibility when possible, and room to grow within a supportive team.

This is an in-person, on-site position in Western New York (Southtowns).

Responsibilities
  • Welcome patients, gather medical histories, medications, and vision concerns, and prepare them for examinations.
  • Perform preliminary testing, including visual acuity, auto-refraction, lensometry, tonometry, retinal imaging, OCT, visual fields, and other testing as appropriate.
  • Accompany the physician during examinations and document findings, diagnoses, treatment plans, prescriptions, referrals, procedures, and follow-up recommendations accurately in real time.
  • Prepare and review patient charts, retrieve previous records, test results, and imaging, and ensure documentation is complete and consistent with practice standards.
  • Prepare exam rooms, calibrate equipment, maintain clean clinical areas, explain testing procedures, and answer general patient questions.
  • Support contact lens training, frame adjustments, front office or clinical workflows, insurance verification, and other patient care activities as needed.
  • Transition between technician and scribe responsibilities, collaborate with physicians and team members, protect patient confidentiality, and help maintain smooth patient flow.
Qualifications
  • Friendly, personable, and customer service oriented, with strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Reliable, dependable, professional, and able to contribute positively within a small, collaborative team.
  • Organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to multitask and adapt to changing priorities in a busy patient care environment.
  • Comfortable learning computer systems and electronic medical record documentation, including OfficeMate, iFinity, Gmail, insurance verification, and internal optical workflows.
  • Previous experience in optometry, ophthalmology, healthcare, medical assisting, or medical scribing is preferred, although training is available for the right candidate.
  • No specific degree is required; a willingness to learn, accept coaching, and become cross-trained in both technician and scribe duties is essential.
  • Able to work the required 2 evenings and alternating Saturday schedule and travel between the two Southtowns offices for occasional coverage.
Benefits
  • Compensation: $20-$25/hour, depending on experience.
  • Medical insurance options
  • 401(k) plan.
  • Paid time off after a 90-day introductory period.
  • Hands-on training in OfficeMate, iFinity, insurance verification, optical workflows, clinical testing, and medical scribing.
  • Cross-training, confidence-building support, and opportunities for growth within the organization.
  • Flexible scheduling when possible, including a weekday off when working an alternating Saturday.
  • Supportive, family-owned culture with strong employee retention, business casual attire, and occasional casual dress days.
