Southgate Surgery Center is seeking an Ophthalmic Technician/Medical Assistant for a PRN position in Southgate, MI. Staffing covers 1–2 days per week with hours generally 6:00am–4:00pm and no late nights or on-call requirements.

Role supports ophthalmologists by monitoring patients, maintaining sterile technique, stocking supplies, and documenting results with supervision from nursing staff. Training is provided on-site.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor vital signs and transport patients.
  • Maintain aseptic technique at all times.
  • Observe for breaks in technique and address.
  • Care for contaminated items properly.
  • Stock and maintain inventory of surgical supplies.
  • Operate and document equipment checks daily.
  • Assist in pre-op assessment and post-op instruction.
  • Document results in medical records and report observations.
  • Work under direct nurse supervision and coordinate with physicians.

Job Title: Ophthalmic Technician - PRN - Training Provided!

Hours
  • PRN - 1-2 days/wk
  • Our center is open Monday-Friday 6:00am-4:00pm
    • Your shift will fall within those hours.
    • You may need to work a little earlier/later as needed.
  • No late nights, weekends, holidays or on-call shifts!
SUMMARY

AnOphthalmic Technician/Medical Assistantis a valuable asset to an Ophthalmologist as they assist in providing excellent patient care to the patients during their visit.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assists in monitoring vital signs and transporting patients.
  • Maintains aseptic technique at all times.
  • Observes for any break in technique.
  • Care properly for contaminated items.
  • Assists in stocking OR supplies.
  • Stocks and maintains adequate inventory of surgical supplies.
  • Checks equipment, such as sterilizer, refrigerator temperature, etc. each surgical day and documents on monthly log sheet.
  • Assists each area as requested.
  • Assists in pre-op assessment.
  • Discontinues Hep-Locks.
  • Assists in post-op instruction review with patient.
  • Acts under the direct supervision of the nurse.
  • Documentation in medical record of results (i.e., BS, VS, etc.)
  • Reports pertinent observation and reactions regarding patients to the nurses and/or physician.
  • Identifies patient and family teaching needs and initiates intervention to meet needs.
  • Maintains and promotes a positive, safe environment for patients and co-workers.
  • Assists with or initiates emergency measures for sudden adverse development in patient’s condition.
  • Monitors levels of inventory in accordance with desired quantities.
  • Attends departmental meetings and in-service education and shows responsibility for own professional practice and on-going education.
  • Participates in economical utilization of supplies and medication, and ensures that equipment is maintained in a clean and safe manner.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
  • Minimum Required: High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required
  • Minimum Required: One year of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
LICENSES AND CREDENTIALS
  • Current Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) or Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) certification is preferred, but not required
SYSTEMS A ND TECHNOLOGY
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • This role requires a variety of physical activities to effectively perform essential job functions. The position involves frequent walking (75%), sitting (50%), and standing (50%), with regular bending, stooping, and reaching (25–50%). Employees must be able to lift, carry, push, and pull items up to 25 lbs. Strong fine motor skills and full use of hands are essential, as the role demands constant grasping, writing/typing, and use of technology. Visual and auditory acuity—including color, depth, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus is required100% of the time. Occasional driving or climbing may also be necessary.
