Job summary

Northwest Eye Surgeons is seeking an ophthalmic technician to educate patients about premium vision correction services, support marketing and sales, and assist ophthalmologists with exams and procedures. You will conduct pre-consultation education, prepare patients for physician visits, and help ensure clinic flow.

Requires 2+ years in ophthalmology, strong communication, EMR proficiency, and ability to explain complex eye care options.

Qualifications

• Strong knowledge of vision corrective procedures and technologies.
• Proven experience in patient education and sales in a medical setting.
• Excellent written and verbal communication; proficient with EMR and MS Office.

Responsibilities

Description

Primary role is to provide education, marketing, and sales of premium vision corrective services to patients before they consult with the physician. Provided accurate documentation and summarization of the ocular examination and recommendations. Maintain patient flow and communication regarding appointment status. Assist Ophthalmologists by performing ophthalmic clinical functions, such as patient workups and special testing. May administer eye medications and instruct the patient in the care and treatment of eye conditions, apply dressings to the eye, and assist with in-office lasers and procedures.

• Conduct pre-consultation sessions with patients to explain the benefits and options of premium vision corrective services, including advanced lenses, laser treatments, and other corrective procedures.
• Answer patient questions and provide detailed information to ensure patients understand their options and the value of premium services.
• Utilize visual aids, brochures, and digital media to enhance patient understanding.
• Marketing and Sales:
• Develop and implement marketing strategies to promote premium vision corrective services within the practice.
• Identify and engage potential candidates for premium packages through patient interactions and consultations.
• Present premium service packages to patients in a compelling and professional manner, emphasizing the benefits and long-term value.
• Achieve sales targets and goals for premium vision corrective services as set by the practice.
• Consultation Preparation:
• Gather and record detailed patient history and data relevant to vision corrective services.
• Prepare patients for their consultation with the physician by ensuring they have all the necessary information and have had their questions addressed.
• Collaborate with the clinical team to ensure a seamless transition from education and sales to physician consultation and treatment.

• Collect and analyze patient feedback to improve educational and sales approaches.
• Training and Development:
• Stay current with advancements in vision corrective technologies and procedures.
• Participate in ongoing training and professional development opportunities provided by the practice.
• Assist in training new staff members on the promotion and education of premium services.

Additional Responsibilities

• Quickly and accurately summarizes and documents what the Ophthalmologist says during an examination, including but not limited to the proper charting of the examination, documenting additions to the chief complaint, assessment, and recommendations for treatment (including justification of decisions reached when appropriate).
• Maintains an awareness of the patient’s verbal and non-verbal communication when the Ophthalmologist is providing instructions as it may necessitate the scribe repeating information, and/or providing patient education materials for the patient to review at home.
• Operates ophthalmic equipment and stereopsis testing.
• Sterilize instruments and maintain ophthalmic instruments or equipment.
• Assist patients in inserting or removing contact lenses.
• This experienced technician will be able to work with any provider, and will have a full skill
• set.
• Be a mentor to other technicians and be able to help train other newer technicians.
• Ensure clinic flow and prioritize technician duties.
• Other duties as required.

Requirements

• Strong knowledge of vision corrective procedures and technologies.
• Proven experience in patient education and sales, preferably within a medical or ophthalmic practice.
• Demonstrated excellence in communication skills and ability to convey ideas and information verbally and in writing
• Ability to explain complex medical information in a clear and understandable manner.
• Proficient with electronic medical records (EMR) systems and Microsoft Office products, G-suite environment.

Education

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) or Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) preferred.
• Minimum of 2 years of experience in an ophthalmic setting.
