Job Profile Summary

This role provides medical and clinical support services to patients, focusing on ophthalmology duties such as vision assessments, eye surgeries, and management of eye diseases, often in patients with systemic illnesses. It requires specialized knowledge gained through vocational education, training, and experience. The role involves working under moderate supervision, solving routine problems, and communicating complex information when needed.

Job Overview

This position facilitates patient care by performing preliminary assessments, screenings, and diagnostic tests, and assists with training technicians.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Certified Ophthalmic Assistant OR Certified Retinal Angiographer
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification or obtain within 3 months of hire
  • Two years of experience as an Ophthalmic Technician
Preferred Qualifications
  • Optical Coherence Tomographer (OCT-C)
  • Bilingual
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Prepare patients for evaluation by obtaining medical history and conducting screenings like visual acuity, refractions, and eye pressure measurement
  • Perform diagnostic tests including OCT, visual fields, fundus photography, and ultrasound testing
  • Assist with contact lens removal, in-office procedures, and patient consent forms
  • Set up exam rooms, ensure proper sterilization, and maintain equipment
  • Support clinic flow, document exams, and assist with triaging and emergency calls
  • Train new technicians under supervision
Physical Requirements
  • Prolonged standing, walking, bending, and moving heavy equipment
  • Close contact with diverse patient populations, including vulnerable groups, with exposure to blood and needles
Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of eye anatomy and terminology
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Attention to detail and ability to work in high-volume clinics
  • Physical ability to assist patients and operate equipment
  • Proficiency with computers and scheduling software
