Job summary

Children’s Wisconsin seeks a full-time ophthalmic technician to assist in diagnostic testing under the supervision of an ophthalmologist. The role includes performing retinoscopy, vision field tests, and contact lens fitting across three clinics in Milwaukee, New Berlin, and Mequon.

Hours are 40 per week, typically 7:30 am - 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday, with no weekends or holidays. CPR/BLS certification is required before start date and equivalent ophthalmic experience will be considered.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of basic eye anatomy and physiology and ophthalmic tests/procedures as would be learned in a two-year ophthalmic technician program.
  • Equivalents in ophthalmic experience will be considered in lieu of formal training.
  • Current CPR/BLS certification is required before start date.

Responsibilities

  • Administers standard ophthalmic tests per physician’s order.
  • Performs diagnostic tests including vision field tests and retinoscopy.
  • Provides evaluation for patients with eye muscle issues using prisms and performs contact lens fitting and dispensing.
  • Explains procedures to patient/family and provides home care instructions.
  • Prepares reports and charts; collaborates with the physician regarding patient progress.
  • Maintains professional demeanor and effective communication with patients, families, and staff.

The person in this role administers & performs diagnostic tests, and provides instruction to patients with correctable vision focusing defects, under the medical direction of a licensed ophthalmologist.

Minimum Requirements:
  • Knowledge of basic eye anatomy and physiology as well as Ophthalmic tests and procedures as would be acquired through completion of a two-year ophthalmic technician program.
  • Equivalent Ophthalmic experience accepted.
  • Current CPR certification - Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers through American Heart/American Red Cross/National Safety Council is required before start date.
Essential Functions:
  • Administers standard ophthalmic tests per physician’s order and according to established procedures and standards.
  • Performs diagnostic tests including vision field tests.
  • Performs retinoscopy.
  • Provides the evaluation of patients with eye muscle problems utilizing prisms.
  • Contact lens fitting and dispensing.
  • Explains procedures to patient and/or family and directs patient during treatment and therapy.
  • Instructs patient and/or family in appropriate home care treatment.
  • Prepares reports and completes charting as required and confers regularly with the physician relative to patient’s progress.
  • Interpersonal and communication skills necessary to work collaboratively with coworkers, physicians, children, and their families.
  • The ability to represent the organization and serve consumers in a professional manner and promote a positive image of the organization and its services.
