Job summary

Children’s Wisconsin is seeking an ophthalmic technician to administer diagnostic tests and provide patient instruction under the supervision of an ophthalmologist.

The role includes performing vision field tests, retinoscopy, contact lens fitting, and preparing patient charts, with emphasis on patient-family communication and safety.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of basic eye anatomy and ophthalmic tests, as would be gained from a two-year ophthalmic technician program or equivalent experience.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills to work with coworkers, physicians, children, and their families.
• Physical ability to walk and stand for extended periods to support patient care procedures.
• Ability to represent the organization professionally and promote its services.
• Frequent bending, lifting, twisting, reaching, and squatting; occasional overhead work.

Job Summary

Administers and performs diagnostic tests, and provides instruction to patients with correctable vision focusing defects, under the medical direction of a licensed ophthalmologist.

Essential Functions

• Understands and satisfies the needs of the neonatal, infant, toddler, pre‑school, school‑age, adolescent and/or adult patient in regards to their growth and development process.
• Obtains necessary data concerning patient's medical diagnosis and history and prepares patient case history.
• Administers standard ophthalmic tests per physician's order and according to established procedures and standards.
• Performs diagnostic tests including vision field tests.
• Performs retinoscopy.
• Provides the evaluation of patients with eye muscle problems utilizing prisms.
• Contact lens fitting and dispensing.
• Explains procedures to patient and/or family and directs patient during treatment and therapy.
• Instructs patient and/or family in appropriate home care treatment.
• Prepares reports and completes charting as required and confers regularly with the physician relative to patient's progress.

• Maintains equipment and instruments.
• Inventories and orders supplies within the clinic; collaborates with the manager to maintain expenses within the approved budget.
• Maintains a clean and safe environment.
• Participates in and supports the Quality Assurance program.
• Identifies potential topics and participates in clinical evaluation and /or research.
• Serves as a resource to physicians, personnel and other departments regarding the functioning of the clinic.
• Sets own professional goals in collaboration with the manager, to improve performance and maintain clinical competence.
• Daily cleaning and stocking of exam rooms

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge of basic eye anatomy and physiology as well as Ophthalmic tests and procedures as would be acquired through completion of a two‑year ophthalmic technician program or equivalent experience.
• Interpersonal and communication skills necessary to work collaboratively with coworkers, physicians, children, and their families.
• Physical ability to walk and/or stand for extended periods of time to perform or assist with patient care procedures.
• The ability to represent the organization and serve consumers in a professional manner and promote a positive image of the organization and its services.
• Frequently bends, lifts, twists, reaches, and squats.
• Occasionally push/pulls and does overhead work.
