Position Summary
As an Ophthalmic Technician, you will assist physicians in a variety of administrative and clinical duties. Responsibilities include preparing patients, setting up examination rooms, performing vision screenings, administering eye medications, cleaning and maintaining instruments, and supporting physicians during minor surgeries and laser treatments.
Job Duties & Essential Functions
- Patient Interaction & Clinical Intake
- Greet and communicate with patients and families with care and respect.
- Initiate patient evaluations by accurately documenting chief complaint, history of present illness, review of systems and other pertinent information.
- Coordinate prior authorizations for medications, ensuring timely access and compliance with insurance requirements.
- Pre-Exam & Diagnostic Testing
- Conduct basic vision tests: visual acuity, pinhole and glare, confrontational fields, extraocular testing, pupillary assessment, tonometry, and dilation.
- Perform advanced diagnostic studies: OCT, fundus photography, IOL Master, Pentacam, A‑scan, B‑scan, Wave Scan/Vario, keratometry, lensometry, and visual field testing.
- Carry out specialized tests: color vision screening, stereopsis, dry eye testing, optical biometry, and refractometry.
- Procedure & Treatment Support
- Assist with in‑office minor surgical procedures and laser treatments.
- Complete prescription refill requests as authorized by the physician, documenting appropriately.
- Track, document, and communicate laboratory results promptly.
- Educate patients on medication use and pre‑ and post‑operative care.
- Assist with contact lens fittings and provide patient instructions on insertion, removal, and care.
- Equipment & Inventory Management
- Maintain inventory of ophthalmic supplies, pharmaceuticals, and instruments.
- Inspect and support maintenance/repair of clinical equipment.
- Assist with surgical instrument cleaning for sterilization.
- Shut down and clean diagnostic equipment as needed.
- Monitor refrigerator temperatures and manage supply dates.
- Clinic Readiness & Administrative Support
- Open and close exam rooms, clean, and secure equipment.
- Assist with opening and closing the clinic.
- Follow safety protocols and clinic procedures.
- Respond to work emails, using shared tools such as Google Drive.
- Ensure HIPAA compliance and protect patient privacy.
- Professional Development
- Participate in trainings, webinars, and in‑service sessions.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum of one year experience as an Ophthalmic Technician.
- COA certification required or to be completed within one year of hire.
- Excellent customer service, organizational, time‑management, and multitasking skills.
- Strong problem‑solving ability and attention to detail.
- Comfortable interacting with patients and staff face‑to‑face.
- Ability to stand for extended periods of time.
Work Schedule
- Rotating days, evenings, and weekends.
- Willingness to travel between Riverhead, Southampton, and Hampton Bays; mileage reimbursement provided.
