Job summary

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• 1–3 years ophthalmology experience preferred.
• Patient care experience required.
• Knowledge of ophthalmology terminology, eye anatomy and medical terminology.

Responsibilities

• Greet and escort patients; obtain consents and insurance information.
• Escort patients to and from examination rooms; assist patients in/out of chairs.
• Obtain ocular, medical and family histories; document in EMR.
• Explain procedures to patients.
• Perform initial patient examinations and specific tests (visual acuity, ocular movements, tonometry).
• Perform automated and manual testing (topography, autorefraction, A-scans/B-scans, OCT).
• Administer dilating drops and other medications as directed.
• Assist physicians with minor surgery and patient monitoring.
• Complete paperwork for physicians; provide educational materials to patients.
• Schedule follow-ups and verify surgery appointments.
• Maintain clean rooms and equipment; stock supplies.
• Answer and triage patient calls; coordinate care with staff.

Job Description

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Greet and escort patients to examination rooms; obtain patient consents and insurance information
• Escort patients to and from various destinations; assist patients in and out of examination chairs
• Obtain ocular, medical and family histories; document/update accurately in patients’ electronic medical record
• Explain procedures to patients
• Perform initial patient examinations by measuring, comparing and testing pupils including visual acuity, extraocular movements, eye pressure, color vision, etc.
• Perform automated and manual testing procedures including corneal topography, autorefraction, application, contrast sensitivity, tonometry, Goldman and Humphrey visual fields, Optical Coherence Tomography, A-Scans and B-Scans, etc. as directed by the physicians
• Administer anesthetics, dilation drops, ointments and medications as directed by the physicians
• Assist physicians with minor surgery and patient monitoring
• Complete paperwork for Physicians
• Provide information and educational materials to patients concerning procedures and surgeries
• Participate in patient follow-up activities; assist patients with scheduling appointments and verify surgery schedules
• Maintain and clean equipment and examination rooms and working areas; stock rooms and/or order supplies
• Answer and triage patient telephone calls
• Establish and maintain productive working relationships with people inside and outside the department and/or practice

Education, Licensure/Certification, and Training

• High School Diploma or GED
• Retinascoping experience preferred 1-3 years' experience in an Ophthalmology practice preferred
• Patient care experience required
• Knowledge of Ophthalmology terminology, eye anatomy and medical terminology

Skills and Abilities

Wayne Health requires all employees [temporary employees and contractors] who will interact with the public and/or co-workers, regardless of clinical responsibility or patient contact, to have started their primary vaccination series against COVID-19 or received a sincerely held religious belief or medical exemption. All newly hired employees are required to have received their first vaccination dose prior to their start date of employment and completed primary series as outlined in FDA's prescribing instruction for vaccine administration. New hires must also receive their booster within 30 days after the date that they are eligible to receive it, per CDC guidelines. Exemptions or accommodations to the Wayne Health vaccine requirement may be approved under certain limited circumstances. Anyone with an approved exemption must have weekly PCR COVID-19 testing on their own time and submit the results every Monday, before arriving at work. Employees whose positions are 100% remote are exempt from these requirements.
