Job summary

Florida Eye Specialist and Cataract Institute is seeking a skilled ophthalmic assistant to support comprehensive eye care across multiple services. You will collect patient histories, conduct refractions, and assist with procedures while ensuring patient comfort and safety.

The candidate should have ophthalmology experience, JCAHPO certification preferred, and an associates degree is a plus. The role involves standing most of the day and performing precise eye measurements in a fast-paced clinic.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of one year in ophthalmology.
  • Certification through JCAHPO preferred.
  • Associates degree preferred.
  • Ability to perform manifest refraction and Goldmann tonometry.
  • Standing/walking 95% of the day; lift at least 20 lbs.

Responsibilities

  • Collect patient medical history and record it.
  • Instruct patients on post-operative care and lens care.
  • Perform visual acuity testing and refractions.
  • Measure pupil size and reactivity; test eye movements.
  • Assist with in-office procedures including lasers.
  • Maintain a sanitized environment and cleanliness.

Description

At Florida Eye Specialist and Cataract Institute, a Sight 360 company, we are building the region’s premier destination for comprehensive vision care. We are a team of over 400 optometrists, ophthalmologists, surgeons, opticians, and eye care professionals serving more than 200,000 patients across 25 different locations in the Greater Tampa Bay area. From routine eye exams and optical retail, to medical optometry, ophthalmology, and surgical procedures, our patients experience end-to-end personalized care and service.

Requirements
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
  • Collecting and recording patient medical history
  • Instructing patients on post-operative care, medication use, contact lens care and exam expectations.
  • Performing visual acuity testing, auto and Manifest Refractions (measurements for the glasses prescription), tonometry (measuring eye pressure) (Goldmann required)
  • Measuring pupil size and reactivity using PERRLA
  • Testing elements of movement (eye muscle function)
  • Performing confrontational visual field testing, pachymetry (Corneal thickness measurement)
  • Performing dry eye testing including Zone Quick and TBUT, Interferometry, brightness acuity testing
  • Participating in light cleaning of the facility
  • Maintaining a sanitized environment
  • Performing corneal topography, retinal nerve fiber layer measurements, retinal thickness and topography, fluorescein angiography, B-scan ultrasonography
  • Assisting with contact lens fitting and instructing patients on insertion and removal of contacts.
  • Preparing for and assisting with in-office procedures including consenting patients
  • Assisting with Lasers or minor procedures
Working Conditions and Environmental/Physical Demands:
  • Standing/walking 95% of the day to perform the essential job duties.
  • Full body rotation (i.e., bending, stooping, twisting, etc.)
  • Ability to lift at least 20lbs.
  • Communicating with others to exchange information.
  • Repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands and/or fingers.
  • No adverse environmental conditions expected.
Qualifications:
  • Required:
  • Minimal of one year in Ophthalmology
  • Preferred:
  • Certification
  • Certification through JCAHPO
  • Associates Degree - preferred
Skills and Abilities:
  • Superior interpersonal and communications skills.
  • Ability to perform manifest refraction is required
  • Ability to perform Goldmann tonometry is required.
  • Ability to effectively multitask
  • Attentive to detail and accuracy.
