Job summary

Johns Hopkins Wilmer Eye Institute is seeking an Ophthalmic Technician to provide clinical support to physicians, with strong training pathways and no prior experience required. The role includes patient history, testing, and basic equipment maintenance, within a state-of-the-art ophthalmology setting.

Ideal candidates will commit to COA certification within 18 months, maintain CPR certification, and contribute to a collaborative clinical team on the School of Medicine campus.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or graduation equivalent.
  • One year experience as an Ophthalmic Technician.
  • Must obtain COA (Certified Ophthalmic Assistant) from JCAHPO within 18 months of start date.
  • CPR certification also required.

Responsibilities

  • Asks every patient to state name and date of birth before testing.
  • Records patient history including ocular history and medications.
  • Measures and records visual acuity and intraocular pressure.
  • Performs ophthalmic testing as ordered by the physician.
  • Maintains examination rooms and inventory, including instruments and supplies.

We are seeking an Ophthalmic Technician whose primary role is to provide technician/clinical support to physicians. Secondary responsibilities include administrative duties such as responding to In-Basket messages from patients to answer questions., refill prescriptions after doctor verification, helps complete forms (i.e. MVA) and involves physicians as needed if patients’ questions require medical advice.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities
  • Asks every single patient to state their name and date of birthbefore performing any of testing regardless of how many times thepatient has been seen before.
  • Compares the patient’s EMRN to the number on the testingmachine.
  • Records patient history including chief complaint, informationon ocular history, past surgeries, medical condition, medicationstaken, allergies, learning assessment, falls risk and familyhistory.
  • Checks pupil response to light by shining light into eye andwatching speed with which pupils constrict; checks for afferentpupillary defect.
  • Measures and records distance and near visual acuity.
  • Measures and records intraocular pressure using applanationtonometry.
  • Performs various ophthalmic testing as ordered by thephysician.
  • Screens for presence of ocular motility disorders.
  • Uses slit lamp to examine eye surface.
  • Performs basic maintenance or repair of clinicalequipment.
  • Compiles and enters data for clinical studies; may participatein other clinical research projects as needed.
  • Assists with in office procedures.
  • Responsible for exam room supply maintenance.
  • Ensures medication expiration dates are current.
  • Responsible for maintaining and ordering instruments.
  • Disinfects and maintains examination rooms.
  • Understands and practices the fundamentals of microbialcontrol.
  • Maintains refrigerator logs and sharps containers.
  • Is familiar with JCAHO requirements and ensures clinic practiceis compliant with regulations.
Non -clinical duties
  • Processes refill requests.
  • Instills eye drops under physicians’ direction.
  • Assists with obtaining prior authorizations for upcoming inoffice procedures.
  • Provides support to front desk staff by offering triaging helpfor appointment scheduling.
  • Responds to patients’ questions and explains technician relatedconcerns to front desk staff.
  • Monitors inventory and orders medications for intravitrealinjections.
  • Provides input on templates/schedules to maximize patient flowand physician efficiency.
  • Maintains general medical knowledge of ocular anatomy andphysiology, systemic diseases, ocular diseases and ocularemergencies.
  • Maintains required (COA) ophthalmic techniciancertifications.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or graduation equivalent
  • One year experience as an Ophthalmic Technician.
  • Must obtain Certified Ophthalmic Asst (COA) from JCAHPO within18 months of start date.
  • CPR certification also required.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience,and additional related experience may substitute for requirededucation beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, tothe extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience in a clinical office setting as an ophthalmic technician.

Starting Salary Range: $19.75 - $35.35 HRLY ($23.22-$34.02targeted; Commensurate w/exp.)

Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
