Job summary

Medstar Health in Washington, DC area is seeking an Ophthalmic Technician to join our team. You will provide primary ophthalmic care to patients under moderate supervision, performing complete histories, preliminary examinations, subspecialty tests, and contact lens work.

Responsibilities include coordinating patient flow, documenting tests such as visual acuity, OCT, and fundus imaging, and assisting with front desk tasks as needed.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 2 years' experience as an ophthalmic technician or ophthalmic assistant.
  • COT within 180 Days.
  • COA within 180 Days.
  • CPR including BLS and NRP within 90 days.
  • Associate degree in related field preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Acquaints new patients with office procedures and explains test purposes to them.
  • Audits clinical supply levels and troubleshoots instruments as needed.
  • Participates in meetings and quality/service improvement initiatives.
  • Performs documentation and measurements (various ophthalmic tests).
  • Provides telephone support for ocular emergencies and covers front desk duties as needed.

General Summary of Position

Medstar Health has an opportunity for an Ophthalmic Technician to join our team at Medstar team!

The Ophthalmic Technician provides primary ophthalmic care to patients under moderate supervision. Performs complete ophthalmic history and preliminary examinations, subspecialty tests, and contact lens work.

Primary Duties:
  • Acquaints all new patients with the office procedures to which they will be exposed. Informs patients of the purpose of all tests personally performed and how they will be affected during the tests. Determines which patient should be taken next from the waiting room to have testing initiated. Escorts all patients from the waiting room for data collection. Following testing, advise as to who will see them next and make the patient comfortable during their wait. Maintains a smooth flow of patients to the physician, altering the test sequence as required. Communicates with reception and lead ophthalmic technician to facilitate proper patient flow. Obtains patient history to include chief complaint, history of present illness, history (ocular and general), family history, and history of allergies and medications.
  • Audits clinical supply levels, communicating to Physician which items falls below par level. Troubleshoot instruments as necessary, replacing bulbs, checking connections, performing archiving functions according to manufacturer recommendations, and reporting continued difficulty.
  • Participates in meetings/ on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts. Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
  • Performs accurate and consistent documentation and measurement tasks to include: Visual Activity, Manual Lensometry, Confrontational Visual Fields, Stereo Testing, Evaluation of Motility, Pupillary Function Tests, Color Plates, Application Tonometry, Advanced Refractometry, Retinoscopy, Angle Assessment, Dilation of Pupils, Contact Lens Evaluations, Visual Field Testing, Optic Nerve Scanning (i.e. OCT, HRT), Pachymetry, Corneal Topography, A Scan and B Scan, Ophthalmic Imaging including Fluorescein Angiography.
  • Provides telephone support regarding ocular emergencies, prescription refills and patient care questions. Covers front desk responsibilities as needed. Duties may include answering phones, scheduling and cancelling appointments, pre-registering and registering patients in Cerner, and preparing patient charts.
Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 2 years' experience as an ophthalmic technician or ophthalmic assistant.
  • Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) within 180 Days.
  • Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) within 180 Days.
  • CPR (Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation) including BLS and NRP for healthcare providers from the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) within 90 days.
  • Associate degree in related field preferred.
Hiring Range

USD $22.48 - USD $39.75 /Hr.
