Responsibilities

  • Operate ophthalmic imaging equipment (color fundus photography, OCT, OCT angiography, retinal thickness analysis, slit lamp, goniophotography).
  • Review orders and patient history in Epic before imaging.
  • Explain imaging procedures to patients and provide instructions during imaging.
  • Perform visual field testing with Humphrey Visual Field Analyzer per protocol.
  • Edit and transfer images to patient databases in Forum and Epic.

Job description

Join the UPMC Vision Institute team as an Ophthalmic Imager and play a vital role in delivering exceptional eye care to patients. In this position, you will utilize advanced ophthalmic imaging equipment to capture high-quality diagnostic images that support the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of a wide range of ocular conditions. Working closely with ophthalmologists and clinical staff, you will ensure accurate image acquisition while providing an outstanding patient experience in a fast-paced specialty practice. This full-time role offers a Monday through Friday daylight schedule with staggered shifts of 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. or 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (or until the last patient is seen). Enjoy a strong work-life balance with no weekends and no holidays, plus approximately 20% travel to support additional clinical locations as needed. Candidates should possess strong attention to detail, excellent patient care skills, and prior ophthalmic experience.

Responsibilities:
  • Perform a variety of highly skilled duties associated with the operation of specialized equipment to assist physicians in documenting, diagnosing, and treating diseases of the eye, including color fundus photography, optical coherence tomography, OCT angiography, retinal thickness analysis, slit lamp and goniophotography, visual field testing, external photos, and a-scans.
  • Reviews physician’s orders and patient’s medical history and allergies in Epic prior to performing imaging and photography.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age and condition of the patients serviced in the department. Provides for care and/or extends services as described in department policies and procedures.
  • Explain imaging procedures to patient and provides instruction during imaging.
  • Perform optical coherence tomography and ocular digital photography using different makes and manufacturers in accordance with protocols.
  • Perform visual field assessment using the automated Humphrey Visual Field Analyzer in accordance with protocols.
  • Access and review previous patient notes within Epic.
  • Recognize problems or malfunctions of photographic, diagnostic, and related equipment versus patient media opacities. May assist in making minor adjustments and perform preventive maintenance in accordance with established procedures. Advises supervisor of malfunctions or problems affecting the accuracy and quality of scans or images requiring repair by vendor.
  • Recognize and help rectify issues with image import into Forum, image archiving and storage and managing duplicate patients, including contacting IT/Forum group as required.
  • Maintain adequate levels of supplies for imaging department and notifies supervisor of supplies needing to be ordered.
  • Participates in the collection of patient history and complete ocular workup such as visual acuity, ocular history, vital signs, intraocular pressure, and records results in patient record.
  • Ophthalmic imaging procedures which may include but are not limited to OCT, Anterior OCT, HRT, Color fundus photos, corneal topography, visual fields, a-scans, b-scans, external photos.
  • Ophthalmic procedures / assessments including but not limited to visual acuity tests and instilling eye drops in accordance with established approved protocols for patient safety.
  • Ability to edit and transfer images from digital camera to the patient database in Forum and Epic.
  • Basic knowledge of anatomy of the eye and ophthalmic disease processes.
