The role involves daylight hours, Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with occasional travel to other UPMC sites (~5%).

Responsibilities

  • Perform ophthalmic imaging using color fundus photography, OCT, OCT angiography, and related modalities.
  • Review orders and patient history in Epic prior to imaging.
  • Assist in age-appropriate patient care and documentation in the patient record.
  • Explain imaging procedures to patients and provide clear instructions.
  • Operate imaging equipment and perform routine maintenance per procedures.
  • Identify equipment issues and communicate malfunctions to supervisor.
  • Manage image transfer and storage between Forum and Epic systems.
  • Maintain imaging supplies and participate in ocular workups (visual acuity, history, IOP).
  • Capture diverse images (including external photos) and ensure quality scans.

Job description

UPMC Mercy Vision Institute is hiring an Ophthalmic Imager to support its location at 1622 Locust Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15219. This role is responsible for performing high-quality ophthalmic imaging and diagnostic testing to assist providers in the evaluation and treatment of patients with a wide range of eye conditions. The Ophthalmic Imager will work closely with physicians and clinical staff to ensure accurate image capture, maintain equipment, and provide excellent patient care in a fast-paced clinical environment. This position operates during daylight hours, Monday through Friday, between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., depending on clinic needs. Occasional travel (approximately 5%) to other UPMC sites may be required based on staffing and operational needs.

Responsibilities
  • Perform a variety of highly skilled duties associated with the operation of specialized equipment to assist physicians in documenting, diagnosing, and treating diseases of the eye, including color fundus photography, optical coherence tomography, OCT angiography, retinal thickness analysis, slit lamp and goniophotography, visual field testing, external photos, and a-scans.
  • Reviews physician?s orders and patient?s medical history and allergies in Epic prior to performing imaging and photography.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age and condition of the patients serviced in the department. Provides for care and/or extends services as described in department policies and procedures.
  • Explain imaging procedures to patient and provides instruction during imaging.
  • Perform optical coherence tomography and ocular digital photography using different makes and manufacturers in accordance with protocols.
  • Perform visual field assessment using the automated Humphrey Visual Field Analyzer in accordance with protocols.
  • Access and review previous patient notes within Epic.
  • Recognize problems or malfunctions of photographic, diagnostic, and related equipment versus patient media opacities. May assist in making minor adjustments and perform preventive maintenance in accordance with established procedures. Advises supervisor of malfunctions or problems affecting the accuracy and quality of scans or images requiring repair by vendor.
  • Recognize and help rectify issues with image import into Forum, image archiving and storage and managing duplicate patients, including contacting IT/Forum group as required.
  • Maintain adequate levels of supplies for imaging department and notifies supervisor of supplies needing to be ordered.
  • Participates in the collection of patient history and complete ocular workup such as visual acuity, ocular history, vital signs, intraocular pressure, and records results in patient record.
  • Ophthalmic imaging procedures which may include but are not limited to OCT, Anterior OCT, HRT, Color fundus photos, corneal topography, visual fields, a-scans, b-scans, external photos.
  • Ophthalmic procedures / assessments including but not limited to visual acuity tests and instilling eye drops in accordance with established approved protocols for patient safety.
  • Ability to edit and transfer images from digital camera to the patient database in Forum and Epic.
  • Basic knowledge of anatomy of the eye and ophthalmic disease processes.
