Full Time Ophthalmic Assistant

Mercy Eye Clinic - Springfield, MO

Overview:

Greets patients, escorts them to and from examining rooms, and obtains ocular, medical, and family histories. Assists the doctor during exams, minor surgeries, and additional testing. Supports screeners, surgery scheduling technicians, and front desk staff as needed. Answers patient calls. This job description is not exhaustive and may be subject to reasonable accommodations.

Qualifications:

• Experience: Good telephone and communication skills.
• Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:
  • Assist in ophthalmology and optometry treatments and procedures.
  • Interpret, adapt, and apply guidelines and policies.
  • Communicate clearly and maintain effective relationships with patients, staff, and the public.
  • Operate equipment such as VFA, A Scans, PAM, BAT, color vision testing, pupil evaluation, Amsler grid, automated keratometry, and corneal topography.
  • Preferred knowledge of ophthalmology office procedures, anatomy, physiology, and ocular/systemic diseases.
  • Experience with eye drops, ointments, irrigating solutions, and pharmacology of dilation drugs.
  • Minimum of one year previous work experience preferred.
• Responsibilities:
  • Prepare examination rooms and manage patient schedules.
  • Greet patients and assist with history taking and testing.
  • Perform visual acuity tests, color vision, Amsler grid, depth perception, and ocular measurements.
  • Administer ocular medications and instruct patients.
  • Assist with surgical procedures and additional testing.
  • Maintain accurate records, clean and sterilize equipment, stock supplies.
  • Perform pre-op procedures and assist with contact lens management.
  • Handle phone triage, emergency calls, and front desk coverage.
  • Follow universal precautions, wear PPE, maintain professional appearance, and adhere to attendance standards.
