Job summary

UT Health San Antonio's UCCH Ophthalmology team is seeking a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) to assist with patient examinations and treatments under supervision. The role includes performing basic ocular function tests, assisting during procedures, and ensuring a steady flow of patients through the clinic.

Qualifications include COA certification, high school diploma or GED, and at least one year of technical experience.

Qualifications

• Understanding of basic medical anatomy and ocular diseases.
• Adheres to sterile techniques and infection control.
• Familiar with common medical abbreviations and terminology.

Responsibilities

• Performs basic ocular function tests and evaluation of pupils.
• Assists physician with minor surgical procedures and room setup.
• Maintains ophthalmic instruments and supplies in clean, sterile, and functional condition.
• Maintains logs (spore testing, refrigerator, instruments) and exam room stock.
• Docs comprehensive patient workups: medical history, medications, chief complaint.
• Administers eye and oral medications per directions.
• Educates patients/parents on in-home care and post-procedure instructions.
