Job summary

Duke Eye Center of Raleigh is seeking a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant to support physicians and staff in performing diagnostic eye tests, including visual acuity, tonometry, lensometry, and pupil assessment.

Under supervision, you may administer dilation or anesthetic drops, assist with refraction, manage patient flow, stock exam rooms, and contribute to a confidential, patient-centered environment. Day shifts, Monday–Friday, no weekends.

Qualifications

  • Education background generally equivalent to a high school education.
  • 1 year of directly related experience in Ophthalmology or Optometry; OR graduation from an accredited Ophthalmic Technician program.
  • Certification as a certified Ophthalmic Assistant by JCAHPO and BLS Certification.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in delivery of patient care; perform preliminary screening examinations (visual acuity, history taking, tonometry, lensometry, motility, pupil assessment, visual fields, refraction).
  • Examine cornea, lens, and anterior chamber with slit lamp; may dilate or adminster anesthetic drops; assist with contact lens training.
  • Stocking and maintenance of exam rooms; maintain supplies; order medical/office supplies; transport contaminated instruments for sterilization; calibrate and monitor equipment.
  • Perform clerical tasks: appointments, phone screening, relay messages, document prescriptions and test results in patient charts.
  • Demonstrates professional conduct, confidentiality, and supportive interaction with patients and staff; contribute to a positive work environment.
  • Participate in own professional development and support learners.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

JOB SUMMARY

We are seeking aOphthalmic Assistant, Certified. Under close supervision, assist the Eye Center physicians and other technical support personnel to perform diagnostic tests necessary for evaluation of patient eye problems. Performs basic ophthalmic testing procedures as directed by physician or supervisor including, but not limited to: visual acuity, history taking, tonometry, lensometry, motility, pupil assessment, visual fields, and may perform refraction. May administer dilation or anesthetic drops. Performs various clerical, stocking, and maintenance functions.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Participates in the delivery of patient care in an effective manner. Under close supervision perform preliminary screening examinations for physician review including, but not limited to, visual acuity, history taking, tonometry, lensometry, motility, pupil assessment, visual fields, simple color vision tests, and may perform refraction. Examine the cornea, lens, and anterior chamber of the eye using a slit lamp and note variations from normal. May administer dilation or anesthetic drops. May assist with patient contact lens insertion and removal training.
  • Performs stocking and maintenance functions. Maintains physical environment of exam and procedure rooms. Cleans and stocks rooms daily and maintains appropriate supply of sample drug medications as needed. Assists with ordering medical/office supplies. Prepares for transport of contaminated instruments and equipment for sterilization. Facilitates calibration, maintenance, and monitoring of equipment as needed.
  • Performs various clerical functions. Assists with appointments and telephone call screening activities. Answers phones, takes messages and relays to appropriate individuals. Under direction of physician, may call pharmacy with prescription refills and records prescriptions in patients chart. Files test results, forms, and letters into medical records.
  • Demonstrates a positive, concerned and sensitive response in the work place. Interacts with patients, visitors, and all personnel in a courteous manner. Resolves conflict in a healthy and constructive manner. Maintains confidentiality of information regarding patients and co-workers; demonstrates respect for individual, cultural, and social differences. Contributes to the positive atmosphere of the work environment
  • Participate in own professional development by maintaining required competencies, identifying learning needs and seeking appropriate assistance or educational offerings. Supports the development of other staff and formal learners.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
JOB ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
  • Education: Work requires an education background generally equivalent to a high school education.
  • Experience: Work requires 1 year of directly related experience in Ophthalmology or Optometry; OR, graduation from an accredited Ophthalmic Technician program.
  • Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification: Work requires certification as a certified Ophthalmic Assistant by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO). Must have BLS Certification
JOB HOURS

The schedule for this position is day shifts, Monday-Friday, with no weekends or holidays.
