Job summary

Lakewood Eye Physicians & Surgeons in Southern California seeks an Ophthalmic Assistant to support ophthalmologists with patient workups, testing, and documentation. You will collect histories, measure visual acuity and eye pressure, and perform diagnostic tests, recording findings in the EMR. The role requires attention to detail and teamwork.

Shifts are Monday–Friday, with a comprehensive benefits package and opportunities for professional growth within a friendly eye care practice.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; college degree preferred.
  • 1-3 years of related medical assistant/ophthalmic or clinic experience preferred.
  • Experience with checking intraocular pressure and refraction is a plus.
  • English reading/writing and Spanish bilingualism a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Interview and record patients’ chief complaints and histories.
  • Prepare patients for examination or treatment by the physician.
  • Enter patient information into the EMR system.
  • Perform diagnostics: topography, OCT, visual field tests.
  • Transcribe physician data into the EMR.
  • Instill eye medications as ordered by the physician.
  • Communicate with patients about prescriptions, care, and post-visit instructions.
  • Maintain sterile equipment and exam rooms.
  • Support administrative tasks and maintain supplies.

Job description

Purpose: To assist ophthalmologists by performing ophthalmic clinical functions. Duties include full -patient work-up; which include, taking patient medical histories/chief complaints, measuring visual acuity, eye pressure, instilling eye medication, and conducting diagnostic tests, as ordered by the ophthalmologist.Job Duties and Responsibilities:Interviews and records patients’ chief complaint and medical historiesPrepares patients for examination or treatment by the physicianEnters patients’ medical information into the patient’s electronic medical recordPerforms technical work ups and diagnostic testing including conducting topography, OCT and visual field tests, etc.Transcribes physician’s examination data into patient’s electronic medical recordInstills eye medications, as ordered by the physicianCommunicates with patients about their prescriptions, follow-up care, procedures, symptoms, physician generated instructions and/or pre/post-operative statusPrepares treatment rooms for patient exams, keeping the rooms clean, neat, and stockedMaintains and sterilizes medical equipment, instruments, and facilitiesPerforms administrative duties such as answering phones, sending correspondence to pharmacies or other authorized parties, maintaining an inventory of suppliesFollows applicable policies and procedures and takes precautions to establish a safe work environmentMaintains strict patient protocols in accordance with practice policies/ HIPAA requirementsMaintains a high level of professionalism with patients, providers, and staffPerforms other duties as assigned and works overtime as necessaryRequirements:Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate/Bachelor’s degree preferredExperience: 1-3 years of related medical assistant, and/or optometry/ophthalmic or clinic experience requiredExperience with checking intraocular pressure and refraction, a plusUsing a computer; EMR software experience and Microsoft Office experience requiredLanguage: Ability to read, write, and communicate in English; Bilingual in Spanish, a plusStrong knowledge of medical terminology, basic math and science, detailed oriented chartingLicense/Certification: Valid COA, COT, or Ophthalmic Scribe Certified preferredMust be able to travel between Lakewood and Los Alamitos office, work overtime, as neededWork is performed in a clinical setting. Clinic attire required, such as scrubs, closed toe shoes, maintaining professional grooming standard required.Must be able to stand or walk for up to 8 hours with bending, stooping, squatting, sitting, twisting, and reaching.
