This job obtains authorization and referral clearance for all Ophthalmology appointments, ensures authorization is entered into the system linking to the appointment, contacts referring and primary care physicians, discusses diagnosis to obtain appropriate coverage for initial and follow-up care, and serves as a liaison between insurance companies, referring and primary care physicians, patients, and the Department of Ophthalmology on all referral and authorization issues. It also serves as a Financial Counselor for fee-for-service appointments and elective procedures, collecting fees and ensuring proper posting to patient accounts. The role involves scheduling protocols for various subspecialty Ophthalmology practices and works closely with the Coordinator and Team Leader to implement policies, procedures, and goals of the Clinic.

Education

Physical and Environmental Demands

Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds constantly. The physical demands are in excess of those for Sedentary Work. Use of mechanical lifting devices or team lifts is recommended. Must be able to sit for prolonged periods. Routine tasks involve no exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissue, and there is no occupational risk for exposure to communicable diseases.

Because of the healthcare setting, there may be occupational risk for exposure to hazardous medications or waste.
