Job description

Operator (Wastewater Treatment DI)

The MWRA is looking for an Operator (Wastewater Treatment DI) to operate, monitor, and inspect assigned wastewater facilities and treatment plant operational equipment, processes, and systems on an assigned shift in a designated area. Performs assigned maintenance functions as part of a team under the direction of the assigned Area Supervisor/Shift Operations Manager. This position works under the general supervision of the Area Supervisor/Shift Operations Manager. They may supervise or direct assigned employees at a lower grade, as well as provide guidance or instruction to Operator-in-Training.

This position:

  1. Operates equipment manually and through instrument panel and programmable logic control units, system flows and levels in assigned process area. Equipment may include, but will not be limited to the following: pumps, valves, gates, meters, gauges, controllers, motor control centers, level control devices, mixers, oxygen generation, chemical feed, odor control, and hydroelectric equipment.
  2. Takes initial action to correct malfunctions of equipment and reports malfunctions and variances to the Area Supervisor/Shift Operations Manager.
  3. Inspects and troubleshoots mechanical, electromechanical, pneumatic, or hydraulic equipment using tools and gauges of the trade. Performs preventive maintenance on operations equipment as directed by MAXIMO, such as but not limited to: greasing and lubrication, minor packing adjustments, opening hatches and installing safety rails, changing light bulbs, HVAC filters, and performing minor maintenance during shift work as required.
  4. Operates motor vehicles such as vans and pick-up trucks to transport materials to work sites, and pickup and deliver supplies and equipment.

This position requires a high school diploma or GED or basic reading, writing, mathematical and oral communication skills as normally attained through a high school education or equivalent and a working knowledge of wastewater treatment system operation and treatment plant equipment and at least one (1) year of experience preferably at a wastewater treatment plant. This includes a working knowledge of treatment plant processes, systems, and operation of related equipment, such as instrument panels, programmable logic control units, pumps, valves, motor control centers, level control devices, mixers, oxygen generation, chemical feed, and odor control equipment. Special requirements include a valid Massachusetts Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Grade 4 license (Full or Operator in Training (OIT)), a valid Class D Motor Vehicle Operator’s license, and satisfactory completion of competency-based training program in accordance with the productivity improvement plan training program established at MWRA. Completion of MWRA Introduction to Supervisory Development course is strongly encouraged.

Salary: $60,403.10 – $85,746.11 annually moves to $63,259.82 – $90,564.19 upon completion of PIP training.

Work Schedule: Wednesday through Sunday 3:00pm – 11:00pm. *Shift differential $4.50 per hour for nights and weekends. Temporary Pilot Program agreed to by the Union. *This position has been designated as essential in instances where the MWRA Executive Director requires essential personnel to report to work such as inclement weather or other emergencies.
