Job summary

Rio Blanco County in Rangely, CO is seeking an Operator I to perform skilled and unskilled labor in road construction and maintenance, operating heavy equipment at a basic level, and ensuring public safety.

You will drive tractor/trailer rigs, snow plows with sander, perform inspections, load materials, and assist in traffic control and road repairs. CDL is required or obtain within 6 months; MSHA and First Aid certifications encouraged.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Meet the qualifications for a CDL driver under FMCSA and Colorado regulations.
  • 1 year related experience preferred.
  • Flagging Certification within 30 days of hire.
  • First Aid and CPR certification within 1 year of hire.
  • MSHA training annually.

Responsibilities

  • Operate tractor/trailer rigs and dump trucks for road construction and maintenance.
  • Conduct pre/post trip inspections of equipment.
  • Load and haul materials and heavy equipment between sites.
  • Perform flagging and work zone traffic control.
  • Maintain daily records of hours, equipment usage and materials.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

POSITION SUMMARY:

Operates commercial motor vehicles and performs skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled labor in the construction and maintenance of county roads. Operates heavy equipment at a basic level of proficiency.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Operate tractor/trailer rigs, tandem dump trucks and belly dumps in the construction and maintenance of County roads. Operates tandem snow plows with sander in adverse conditions for snow and ice removal to provide for the safety of the traveling public. Conducts a walk-around of assigned equipment before each use and completing pre/post trip inspections
  • Operates heavy equipment at a basic level of proficiency.
  • Loads and hauls materials and heavy equipment to various locations within and outside of the County.
  • Performs manual labor including but not limited to: flagging and work zone traffic control, replacing cutting blades and tires on equipment, installing and cleaning cattle guards and culverts, building fences, installing and repairing road signs, repairing and filling potholes, cutting brush and trees, removing rocks and debris from roadsides, performing bridge maintenance, clean up flood damage, assists in forest fires and other duties as required.
  • Performs minor maintenance on equipment and report any repairs requiring a mechanic.
  • Maintains accurate daily record of hours worked, equipment hours and materials used.
OTHER DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assists mechanics on difficult jobs when assigned.
  • Performs landfill duties when assigned. Regulates and covers waste according to policy.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of:
  • Laws and regulations governing a CDL Driver
  • Basic road construction and maintenance techniques and procedures
Skill in:
  • Operation of commercial motor vehicles.
  • Basic skill in operation heavy equipment.
Abilities:
  • Receive supervision and follow directions.
  • Maintain accurate documentation.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on equipment.
  • Complete assignments accurately without follow-up.
  • Ability to maintain composure in stressful situations.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with management, co-workers and the public.
  • Work safely and responsibly.
Education and/or Experience:

Any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Meet the qualifications for a CDL driver under the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations and the State of Colorado
  • One year of related experience or road construction experience preferred
  • Take and maintain flagging certification within 30 days of hire
  • Take and maintain First Aid and CPR certification within 1 year of hire
  • Take annual MSHA training
Licenses or Certificates:
  • Valid Class B Commercial Driver License, Class A Commercial Driver License within 6 months of hire.

  • MSHA Part 46 Training
Physical Demands:
  • Sitting, walking or standing for long periods
  • Must be able to stoop, bend, stretch, twist, reach, kneel, squat and balance repetitively
  • Handling, seizing, holding, grasping, or otherwise working with hands
  • Climbing stairs
  • Unaided lift up to 50 pounds, aided lift over 50 pounds
  • Climbing ladders
Work Environment:
  • Work is performed primarily in the field operating equipment, vehicles, or performing manual labor
  • Exposure to loud noises, vibrations, heights, depths, dirt, oil fumes, dust, mud, grease, and extreme weather conditions
Other:
  • Required to work nights, weekends, and holidays, if weather necessitates.
  • Must be able to submit to and pass drug and alcohol testing as directed under the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations.
