Job summary

City of Rutland seeks an Operator Mechanic for the 3rd shift to monitor and maintain the wastewater treatment plant. This role supports daily operations by lubricating pumps and motors, disassembling and cleaning equipment, cleaning grates and wet wells, and performing minor electrical and plumbing tasks to ensure continuous operation.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Must be 18 years or older.

Responsibilities

• Operates treatment facilities to control water flow and processing of wastewater, sludge and effluent.
• Maintains gauges, meters and control panels.
• Inspects pumps, sump pumps, ventilators and air supplies; primes pumps as necessary.
• Interprets meter readings and test results to determine processing needs.
• Operates valves and gates; starts/stops pumps, engines and generators to control flow and treatment.
• Maintains records and reports related to wastewater operations.
• Extracts samples and conducts routine laboratory tests.
• Inspects and cleans lift stations, facilities and grounds.
• Keeps the facility clean, safe, and well-maintained; may perform grounds maintenance.

Classification: Full-time, Hourly/Non-Exempt

Grade: 4 RATE: $26.12 (+Shift Diff)

Reports to: Chief Operator

Job Summary: This position is a part of the crew that operators the City’s wastewater treatment plant. This is accomplished by assuring the proper, continuous lubrications of pumps and motors, taking pumps apart and cleaning when plugged, cleaning grates and wet wells, etc. Also performs minor electrical and plumbing duties to guarantee the smooth operation of the facility following a daily schedule of work events.

• Operates treatment facilities to control water flow and processing of wastewater, sludge and effluent
• Maintains gauges, meters and control panels
• Inspects pumps, sump pumps, ventilators and air supplies: primes pumps as necessary
• Observes variations in operating conditions and interprets meter and gauge readings along with test results to determine processing requirements
• Operates valves and gates either manually or by remote control. Starts and stops pumps, engines and generators to control and adjust flow and treatment process
• Maintains a variety of records and reports related to wastewater system operations
• Extracts samples and performs routine laboratory tests and analysis
• Inspects and cleans lift stations, facilities and grounds
• Maintain the facility in a clean, orderly and safe condition; and performs routine grounds maintenance work as needed. This can include painting and landscaping work as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma (or equivalent)
• Must be 18 years old
• Must have a valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
• Must have a Class 1 Certification as a Vermont wastewater treatment plant operator as specified by the State of VT Department of Water Resources or be able to obtain in a reasonable amount of time.
• Must be capable of successfully completing a background check.
