Job Duties

VDOT's Lynchburg District Marysville Area Headquarters is seeking a skilled Operator Maintenance to drive, improve, and maintain infrastructure for the Virginia Department of Transportation. The role involves equipment operation, preventive maintenance, and manual labor for roadway maintenance. This position is essential.

Core Responsibilities Include:

  • Work as part of a team clearing drainage, removing debris, cutting brush, and roadway maintenance.
  • Operate equipment such as dump trucks, backhoes, graders, tar distributors, rollers, loaders, mowing tractors, etc.
  • Use hand and power tools and perform manual labor tasks.
  • Respond to emergencies blocking roads, such as traffic accidents and debris, providing traffic control and activities to reopen roads. Emergency work may occur outside normal hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Set up work zones and perform traffic control, ensuring proper work site protection.
In addition to a comprehensive benefits package, a $3,000 sign-on bonus is available for qualified candidates with a current CDL. Current VDOT employees are not eligible for this bonus.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
  • Skill in operating and maintaining hand and power tools.
  • Safety shoes required.
  • Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain them.
  • Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Skill in operating and maintaining highway maintenance equipment.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of highway maintenance methods and procedures.
Additional Considerations:
  • Experience in emergency operations, snow removal, storm response, and accident cleanup.
  • Experience with preventive maintenance and minor repairs.
  • Training or education in Maintenance, Vehicle Operations, or related fields is desirable.
  • Valid CDL with endorsements.
