Qualifications

Job description

Job Summary:
The Operator Laborer I is responsible to assist, operate, and maintain heavy, motorized equipment used in aspects of earth moving excavation in both surface and subsurface conditions in a safe and efficient manner. Assist equipment Operators and any additional field personnel with various duties including handling material, set up and tear down of equipment, cleaning and maintaining equipment, and operating various hand tools on job sites. Ensure that all equipment and tools are properly accounted for.

Essential Functions:

  • Responsible to perform physical labor at commercial and residential buildings, highways and excavation or demolition sites for heavy construction projects.
  • Cleans and prepares job sites and tools, manually digs trenches, sets braces and cleans up rubble and debris, as needed.
  • Performs numerous manual duties, including: the operation of both manual and mechanical clearing equipment, installation of manual pipes, structure and installation (MH’s or CB’s) and installation of storm water protection devices (silt fences and bole checks).
  • Assists with excavation and / or hand excavation of soils.
  • Operates hand and power tools of all types including: air hammers, earth tampers, cement mixers, measuring equipment, handheld power saws and compaction equipment, set up, maintain, tear down traffic control devices and a variety of other equipment.
  • Ability to operate a multitude of heavy motorized equipment used in earth moving operations, including, but not limited to, excavators, bulldozers, compaction equipment, skid steer, directional drills and front end loaders to support a variety of operations.
  • Constructs, builds, levels and excavates land and below surfaces using construction equipment, always maintaining awareness of your surroundings and swing radius.
  • Uses equipment as appropriate to perform general excavation practices such as leveling, grading and loading.
  • Identifies and observes proper construction hand signals etiquette to efficiently and safely operate machines.
  • Loads a multitude of materials either to or from job sites onto different variations of trucks, transport vehicles and roll off containers for transport to or from appropriate locations.
  • Operates heavy equipment in a safe and efficient manner in order to minimize the risk of injury or property damage.
  • Ability to follow the field supervisor’s direction by utilizing a multitude of machines to complete general tasks, achieving proper grade and elevation(s).
  • Understanding and knowledge to follow direction by reading grade lathe, grade cards, elevation hubs, benchmarks, control points and other markings to achieve job specifications.
  • Expertise to perform and utilize a multitude of machinery to achieve elevations to 1/10th of a foot of requirements.
  • Expertise in compaction testing with general knowledge of multitude of materials, taking into consideration optimum moisture both in a smooth drum and a sheep’s foot.
  • Expertise in knowing how to read and understand how to measure in increments, inches, feet and sea level elevations.
  • Clearly communicates with field supervisors to discuss duties, construction problems and improvements methods.
  • Reads and complies with safety plans, work permits, maintenance instructions, training manuals, MSDS’s, warning tags, traffic signs and procedure manuals.
  • Serves as a backup to other positions at the direction of management.
  • Performs daily safety and maintenance checks.
  • Ensures adherence to safe work practices and procedures.
  • Physical requirements include, lifting, bending, stooping, reaching, climbing, crawling, walking, grasping, pushing, pulling, kneeling, and working in all climate conditions.
  • Ability to lift 50+ lbs. on a frequent basis.
Qualifications

Competencies or Experience Requirements

  • Class A - CDL License with Tanker Endorsement preferred.
  • One (1) to five (5) years experience preferred.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Ability to work in areas of uneven terrain.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Exemplify a strong work ethic.
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • Able to successfully pass all required training.

Education Requirements

High School diploma or general education degree (GED)

Safety

Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Manual of Safety Practices and Procedures.

Travel

Travel to job sites is required as needed.
