Job Description
General Summary: Under supervision, performs a variety of tasks associated with training the associated responsibilities of a certified water/wastewater operator—in preparation for receiving an entry-level certification.
Essential Functions
- Under the direction of a certified Water or Wastewater Operator, performs tasks associated with the operations of a water or wastewater facility.
- Operates treatment facilities to control flow and processing of water/wastewater, sludge, and effluent.
- Reports operating problems to lead operator or supervisor and performs directed corrective action during assigned shift.
- Monitors gauges, meters, and control panels.
- Observes and reports abnormalities to Certified Operator.
- After training, operates valves and gates either manually or by remote control.
- After training, starts and stops pumps, engines and generators to control and adjust flow and treatment processes.
- Maintains shift log and records meter and gauge readings.
- Learns and gains skill in a variety of equipment maintenance, servicing, and operating tasks.
- Performs routine maintenance functions and custodial duties.
- Understands and carries out oral and written directions.
- Takes and records readings produced from the operation of equipment.
- Learns to take samples and perform routine process laboratory tests and analysis under supervision of certified operator.
- Daily and punctual attendance in the office and/or job site.
- Establishes and maintains cooperative relationships with those contacted during the course of work.
- This position may be required to be available on an on-call basis for emergencies.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

- Position reports to: Supervisor(s), Project Director, Project Manager.
- Level of supervision the employee receives: Works under close supervision; the employee's work product is subject to close, continuous inspection. Employee receives detailed instructions on new projects and assignments.

Education, Experience & License, and/or Certifications
- Education/Experience
- High School Diploma or possession of a GED Certificate.
- Education/Experience Equivalency
- Licensure and/or Certification
- Possession of a valid Driver's License.
- Obtain New Mexico Level I certification in Wastewater within 18 months of the assignment date, depending on department assignment.
- Obtain New Mexico Level I certification in Water within 18 months of assignment date, depending on department assignment.
