Job summary

Fortune Brands Innovations, Inc. is seeking an Operator 1 for our WPC Extrusion Plant. The role covers performing, learning, and observing tasks to ensure quality control, efficiency, and a clean, safe environment across DO, LEARN, SEE, and Teach categories.

The position emphasizes manual tasks, inspections, material handling, and collaboration with the production team. Training will cover extrusion line operations and labeling systems, with a focus on safety and accurate documentation.

Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a manufacturing or production setting is preferred but not required.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude and an eye for detail.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and collaborate with team members.
  • Must be comfortable with physical labor, including lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct color and defect inspections on boards.
  • Perform board measurements and align boards on carts.
  • Pull and band scrap boards, and prepare scrap bundles.
  • Prep carts for finished goods bundles, attach end tags, and package completed finished goods.
  • Label products accurately and ensure proper storage of tools after cleaning.
  • Operate banders, staple guns, and pull carts.
  • Refill banding roll carts and cut black slip sheeting.
  • Move completed, tagged units to designated locations (MCP).
  • Clear production line jam-ups and assist others in packaging and wrapping units.
  • Communicate defects and issues with operators, leads, and supervisors.
  • Inspect groove and side printing for accuracy.
  • Assist with First Piece Inspection (FPI) and line clearance.
  • Monitor raw material supplies and restock as necessary.
  • Isolate and identify defective products per established procedures.
  • Dust walls and equipment, and clean as per the instruction schedule.
  • Perform heavy cleaning tasks, such as truck dumps, and empty trash.
  • Weigh and manage wood bins before disposal.
  • Update Tier 1 boards and maintain accurate records (e.g., FPI, BOM, changeover forms).

Responsibilities are categorized into "See," "Learn," "Do," and "Teach" as per our training and task prioritization framework.

Key Responsibilities
  • Core Duties (DO)
    • Conduct color and defect inspections on boards.

  • Observational Tasks (SEE)
    • Observe printing and adherence of completed product tags.
    • Ensure tagging and packaging meet required standards.
    • Witness updates and maintenance of production paperwork.

  • Strength & Endurance:
    • Lift and move boards, bundles, and raw materials weighing up to [insert specific weight, e.g., 50 lbs].
    • Perform repetitive tasks such as pulling scrap boards and operating tools like staple guns and banders.
    • Stand for extended periods during production tasks.
  • Mobility:
    • Bend, squat, and stretch to align boards, inspect defects, and clean equipment.
    • Walk frequently around the work area to assist with packaging, move tagged units, and monitor the production line.
    • Operate lift trucks and pull carts as needed.
  • Dexterity & Coordination:
    • Use hands and fingers to package goods, refill banding roll carts, and attach serialized labels accurately.
    • Handle tools (staple guns, banders) with precision.
    • Align and stack boards on carts and bundles consistently and efficiently.
  • Visual Acuity:
    • Inspect groove, side printing, and finished products for quality and defects.
    • Monitor SPC screens and ensure accurate labeling.
    • Perform color and defect inspections requiring close attention to detail.
  • Environmental Tolerance:
    • Work in a manufacturing environment that may include noise, vibrations, and varying temperatures.
    • Manage heavy cleaning tasks such as dusting walls, performing truck dumps, and clearing jam-ups.
    • Adapt to handling products in potentially dusty or wet conditions during cooling water removal or cleaning tasks.
  • Communication:
    • Ability to communicate defects and operational issues with team members.
    • Collaborate with others during jam-ups, packaging, and inspection tasks.

Fortune Brands believes in fair and equitable pay. A reasonable estimate of the base salary range for this role is Hiring Pay Range: $39,540 USD - $45,760 USD. Please note that actual salaries may vary within the range, or be above or below the range, based on factors including, but not limited to, education, training, experience, professional achievement, business need, and location. In addition to base salary, employees will participate in either an annual bonus plan based on company and individual performance, or a role-based sales incentive plan.
