Qualifications

Position Overview/Duties

INTRODUCTION: Serves as a Derrickboat Operator, operating and maintaining diesel, electric, and hydraulic-powered derrickboats or floating cranes engaged in major maintenance and repair of locks and dams, channel maintenance activities, marine construction, and general hoisting services.

  • DESCRIPTION OF ASSIGNMENT/DUTIES:
  • Operates derrickboats and floating cranes with capacities up to 250 tons, safely and efficiently.
  • Makes heavy lifts to and from docks, navigation structures, other vessels, and from underwater areas.
  • Moves levers controlling the raising and lowering of the boom and the horizontal movement of the boom, or the horizontal movement of the cab and boom, the height of the hoisting line and blocks, and the opening and closing of the bucket attachments.
  • Operates clamshell buckets, orange peels, and grapples used in digging, lifting, and depositing dredged materials (such as rocks, sand, clay, and snags).
  • Operates mobile cranes having a hoisting capacity up to 100 tons for lifting and moving construction materials, lock and dam components, parts, supplies, and equipment.
  • Performs, mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical troubleshooting and performs minor repairs to equipment on the derrickboats and cranes.
  • Maintains a record of maintenance needed and performed on assigned equipment.
  • Actively participates in all safety and planning aspects of Derrickboat, floating plant, and mobile crane operations.
  • Follows guidance of Corps of Engineers Safety Manual EM385-1-1, all applicable manufacturer standards, OSHA, ANSI, ASME, and other standards relevant in the operation of derrickboats.
  • Coordinates with the Master Derrickboat, Master Towboat, Superintendent, and others to accurately position the Derrickboat or floating crane, handling lines and operating winches, capstans, and spuds, to properly secure the vessel for hoisting operations, towing operations, or for safe mooring.

To qualify at the WG-05/08 grade level, you must have

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Operator, Derrickboat without more than normal supervision. To meet the screen out element, applicants should document experience and/or show the ability to perform common Operator, Derrickboat tasks including assisting with crane or derrick, lattice boom or hydraulic boom services such as wrecking, removing obstructions, submarine drilling and blasting, repairing breakwaters, construction and repair of docks, and pile driving. Have experience where I assist with barge handling, including anchoring, mooring, positioning and towing. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas:

Frequently perform lifting of up to 50 pounds.

Working Conditions

Subject to dangers inherit to derrickboat operations, such as overturning boat, drowning, falling, being struck by loads. The possibility exists of sustaining cuts and bruises in connection with repair activities. Works indoors and outdoors under varied weather conditions.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • One-year probationary period may be required.
  • Appointment may be subject to suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation. Position is designated as Non-Sensitive-No access security clearance.
  • Incumbent must currently possess and be able to maintain the appropriate crane operator’s license for the type and capacity of cranes operated in this position.
  • This position is covered by the civilian drug abuse testing program. Incumbent is required to sign a DA Form 5019-R, Condition of Employment for certain civilian positions identified as critical under the Drug Abuse Testing Program.
  • TOY travel is required to remote sites throughout the region.
  • Incumbent must possess a valid state driver’s license to operate a motor vehicle in accomplishment of assigned duties.
  • A pre-employment physical is required for this position.
