Job summary

MTI, Manufacturing Technology, Inc., is seeking a dedicated Machine Operator in South Bend, IN. The role focuses on operating friction welding machines within the Manufacturing Services division to produce parts for aerospace, automotive, and other industries.

The ideal candidate will have basic math, blueprint reading, and tooling experience, with a strong emphasis on quality and safety. This is a first-shift, Monday–Friday hourly position with opportunities to train and grow.

Qualifications

  • Basic math and measurement skills required.
  • Ability to read and interpret part prints.
  • Experience with hand tools and common measurement devices.

Responsibilities

  • Start, load and unload pieces; secure work pieces and monitor operation.
  • Maintain welders and related machines; replace worn parts as needed.
  • Set up and run fixture changes and machine controls.
  • Inspect welded parts with gauges and calipers to ensure tolerances.
  • Set up and run R&D sample jobs; support lean initiatives.
  • Operate lift truck to move parts between areas.
  • Record inventory and document activities for customers.
  • Communicate with team and supervisors to coordinate work.

We need you to help us keep up with our growing Manufacturing Services demand to deliver state-of-the-art, custom-engineered, machine-based friction welding solutions to our customers in aerospace, automotive, construction & agriculture, defense, mining, oil and gas, and various other fields. This is a Monday-Friday, first-shift, hourly position.


As a Machine Operatorfor Manufacturing Technology, based in South Bend, Indiana, you will be responsible for the machine operation of friction welding machines in the Manufacturing Services division. You will be doing a variety of duties including but not limited to: Identifying, retrieving, and running production jobs for operation, operating friction welders and other machines to make parts per individual customer specifications, loading and unloading parts, using indicators, calipers, height gauges, etc. to inspect parts to ensure they meet customer specifications. Adjustingmachine settings to maintain required part tolerances, responding to and resolving machine fault/error messages, helping create work instructions, SOPs, and other process and training materials. Helping drive improvement through application of lean manufacturing concepts and participation in corrective and preventative action events.


The ideal candidate for this position will have experience in a manufacturing environment and knowhow to setup and operate machinery. They will demonstrate strong critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, be familiar with reading and interpreting part prints, have aptitude for use of hand tools, and be reliable and attentive to quality demands.


Primary Responsibilities and Essential Functions


  • Starts machine, loads and unloads work pieces (lifting work pieces manually or using hoist), secures work piece in fixture and observes machine operation

  • Maintains production lab welders and special-purpose machines. This may include replacing worn machine accessories such as collet pads or fixture pads, cleaning equipment using solvent and rags, and lubricating equipment as needed.

  • Makes fixture and chuck changes, performs fixture and chuck alignment tests, and other set-up changes such as machine controls and limit switch dog or guide locations required to run a particular part.

  • Operates special-purpose machines or equipment required for the production of customer parts

  • Inspects and measures welded work pieces to verify conformance to customer specifications using instruments such as preset comparator, fixed gauges, calipers and micrometers.

  • Set-up and run research and development sample jobs

  • Use lift truck to move parts between welding, storage and shipping areas

  • May be responsible for counting inventory and completing associated documentation required for special customers

  • Communicates with co-workers and supervisor to receive instructions and coordinate activities
