Reporting to the Manager of Exhibits, the Operations Technician is responsible for the daily repair, refurbishment, installation and maintenance of IT systems, exhibit components and audio-visual equipment. The Operations Technician is a critical role in insuring that the visitors’ experiences interacting with exhibits are consistently meaningful and rewarding, as well as ensuring museum staff can work in as efficient a capacity as possible. This role requires knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems, as well as an ability to troubleshoot end user computer systems. The Operations Technicians’ schedule often requires work on weekends, holidays, and evenings to ensure the visitor experience is not diminished due to exhibits that are not functioning properly.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Perform regular preventative maintenance on interactive exhibit components, many which contain mechanical, electrical, electronic or computer controlled devices. Repair promptly when an issue of the public’s safety is involved.

  • Monitor all museum exhibits and communicate with the museum staff on a continuous basis to identify promptly any damage, malfunctions, or wear in any and all exhibits. Troubleshoot exhibits and perform repairs as needed to return exhibits to fully functional status as quickly as possible.

  • Identify and diagnose chronic or systemic defects in individual exhibits which reduce their efficiency and reliability, or compromise their intended function. Make adjustments, modifications, refurbishments and upgrades to improve function and reliability while preserving the visitor experience, educational content, and design impact of the exhibit.

  • Assist in documenting exhibit maintenance procedures, creating and maintaining an exhibit maintenance database for all exhibits and components that is clear, organized, and complete, so that future maintenance and repair can be completed efficiently.

  • Perform regular maintenance and repair of audio-visual and other electronic equipment

  • Clean and service exhibits and exhibit components as required ensuring full functionality, extended service and a safe, hygienic, and attractive visitor experience.

  • Maintain or modify exhibit components which may enhance the preservation of objects on display.

  • Respond to end user calls and help desk tickets to quickly resolve IT issues for museum staff.

  • Use our help desk ticketing system to provide hardware and software support to museum staff located at both the Victory and remote campuses. Monitor queues, ticket statuses, and tickets requiring follow-up

  • Answer IT support communications (phone, email, web form, etc.) in a timely manner and document problem resolutions for new, undocumented issues

  • Regular maintenance and tracking of IT assets including replacing, reissuing, and tracking end user systems.

  • Provide A/V support for evening, weekend, and internal events.

  • Event prep including lighting, sound, and digital signage setup.

  • Provide rapid on-site assistance to the events department to resolve any issues.

  • Assist outside vendors with sound, power, and lighting needs to support our customers at the events.

  • Ability to work, nights, weekends and holidays as the needs of the business dictates.

Qualifications
REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a creative and collaborative environment. Receptive to the ideas of others, able to work cooperatively to prioritize tasks and accommodate many different concerns and opinions.

  • Demonstrated successful skill in troubleshooting and repairing mechanical, electrical and electronic systems including computers, monitors, projectors, speakers and media playback devices.

  • At least three years of previous experience in maintaining interactive exhibits in a museum or public setting.

  • At least three years of previous experience programming and maintain Arduino and/or similar open source microcontrollers, Adobe Flash, Adobe Air, and/or similar interactive software.

  • Previous successful experience in a role that required the incumbent to be innovative and resourceful with effective conceptualization skills and creative problem-solving abilities.

  • Demonstrated experience in solving a wide range of fabrication and IT/AV problems; and in demonstrating flexibility when working with others to troubleshoot and resolve problems.

  • Previous proven experience in a role that required the incumbent to be self-motivated; to demonstrate the ability to work cooperatively as a member of a team as well as individually without close supervision; and the ability to work collaboratively with a small team to accomplish well-defined objectives.

  • Proven ability to rapidly adapt to new and different situations with a positive approach.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in a wide range of fabrication materials and processes involving wood, metal and plastics, and experience with a variety of finishing techniques. Proficient in the use of hand and power tools.

  • The ability to quickly demonstrate a working knowledge of safety and code regulations as they apply to public facilities.

  • Previous successful experience building and/or maintaining custom-designed objects and environments (museum exhibits, scenery and props for theater or television, musical instruments, model making, a/v and computer equipment, etc.).

  • The ability to demonstrate a mindset and skill of as a conscientious and detail-oriented technician; must have the ability to demonstrate an appreciation for the necessity of craftsmanship and quality, and the ability to consistently follow-through with paperwork to completion. (i.e.; record-keeping, and documentation and departmental and Museum assignments).

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of five years’ experience maintaining mechanical and digital interactive systems and/or IT systems.

  • Experience with open source microcontrollers and open source programming.

  • In depth knowledge of MS Office, Windows, and Apple programs and systems.

  • Knowledge of the tools, technology, and aesthetics of architectural or theatrical lighting.

  • Associate Degree in Computer Science, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering

  • Bachelors’ Degree in Computer Science, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering
