Job Overview

Assists in most aspects of drug distribution that do not require the professional judgment of a pharmacist. An Operations Pharmacy Technician I can perform some aspects of drug distribution and preparation under the supervision of a pharmacist, following standard procedures and guidelines.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Education, Certification, and/or Licensure:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Technicians registered with the state after June 30, 2014, must be nationally certified within 15 months of hire (PTCB or EXCPT).
  • Must be registered with the state Board of Pharmacy as a Pharmacy Technician trainee upon hire (except Pennsylvania).
  • National certifications are waived in Maryland.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Education, Certification, and/or Licensure:
  • Associates degree, post-high school education in a science field, or graduation from a pharmacy technician training program.
  • Experience:
  • Six months of pharmacy technician experience.
Core Duties and Responsibilities

The following statements describe the general nature of work performed by individuals in this position. They are not all-inclusive, and other duties may be assigned:

  1. Prepare unit-dose medications, deliver medications, and manage drug supplies.
  2. Read physician orders and prepare medications for dispensing, including pediatric and geriatric dosages.
  3. Understand standard pharmaceutical terms, abbreviations, and symbols.
  4. Communicate with patients or caregivers regarding medication needs and scheduling.
  5. Accurately prepare and deliver controlled substances, maintaining records.
  6. Inventory management: replacing outdated or depleted medications.
  7. Prepare non-parenteral medications, including oral solutions for pediatric patients.
  8. Label parenteral and prescription products appropriately.
  9. Perform arithmetic calculations for medication dosages.
  10. Maintain speed and accuracy standards.
  11. Prepare and label prepackaged medications, maintaining related records.
  12. Manage inventory in pharmacy areas.
  13. Answer phones and direct calls appropriately.
  14. Keep pharmacy and storage areas clean and orderly.
  15. Note that certain duties, such as receiving oral prescriptions and consulting with prescribers, can only be performed by pharmacists, as regulated by law.
Physical Requirements

Must be able to walk, stand, or sit for long periods, lift up to 30 pounds, push 50 pounds, and have dexterity for handling tasks.
