The New York Times is looking for an organized dynamo to join our Newsroom Operations team as an Operations Manager. We are looking for someone who can handle the demands of The New York Times Newsroom.

You will work with the staff members of our Styles and Well teams, supporting these journalists with a variety of daily responsibilities and short- and long-term projects. You will also occasionally assist other departments within the Culture and Lifestyle umbrella as well, including Culture, The Book Review, Food and Cooking, and others.

You are someone who is motivated by maximizing efficiency, helping others and solving problems for the good of the team. The Operations Manager’s work is critical in supporting the journalism produced at The New York Times and all tasks, whether daily, weekly or one-off are valued.

This is a hybrid position based in New York City and includes regular attendance in the office each week per your departmental guidance.

Responsibilities

  • Schedule and update attendance for regular meetings and special events
  • Support editors during breaking news and news events, ensuring that our journalists have what they need to work quickly and efficiently
  • Help plan and implement culture-building activities for the departments
  • Manage and approve staff expenses in Workday, communicating and observing policy limits, correcting categorizations and cost centers
  • Manage work and vacation schedules, maintain accurate time banks in Workday and work with Payroll to verify timebanks for transfers, departures and annual payouts.
  • Oversee accounts payable and accounts receivable for the department
  • Be a move coordinator, working with Facilities and other departments on internal desk moves/assignments
  • Work with HR and Recruiting teams to assist with position management transactions
  • Facilitate Workday management, including onboarding new employees and helping them to get the training, equipment and information they need
  • Purchase supplies and equipment, keep track of all departmental expenses, including capital spending and outside vendor spending
  • Work in Coupa for independent contractor onboarding, sourcing events and purchasing
  • Manage and pay freelancers and vendors
  • Be available for a variety of tasks that come up: troubleshooting, assisting writers and editors.
  • Help with special events on an as-needed basis
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
  • You will report to the Deputy Director of Newsroom Operations.

Basic Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience in an operational or administrative role
  • Experience working with all levels of management and staff; ability to manage the needs of a team of 75+ employees and leaders
  • Maintain a high degree of confidentiality on all matters
  • Ability to work under deadline pressure and be accessible after hours or weekends as breaking news demands

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree, or equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Ability to work under deadline pressure and be accessible after hours or weekends as breaking news demands
  • Advanced experience with Google, MS Word, Excel, PeopleSoft, Workday and Coupa.
  • Experience working in a newsroom or at a media company

The annual base pay range for this role is between:

$81,000 - $97,000 USD
