Job summary

WS Building Materials is seeking an Operations Manager to plan, direct, and coordinate the seamless operations of its distribution centers, driving performance, profitability, and staff leadership across the organization.

The role covers safety training, resource optimization (ERP/SCM), supervising order fulfillment for accuracy, inventory control, cost management, budgeting, freight and delivery oversight, and building a strong, engaged workforce through training and development.

Responsibilities

  • Provide safety training consistently.
  • Formulate suggestions on optimizing organizational resources (ERP and SCM).
  • Supervise the order fulfillment process for 100% accuracy in tally, product, and customer specs.
  • Inventory management related to operations and movement of products (receiving, stock rotation, cycle counts).
  • Define and support procedural compliance across key workflows (pick-ticket to delivery, BOL to receiver, timecards, trip logs).
  • Control costs of operations according to schedule and budgets.
  • Develop and maintain a quality control program to prevent damaged goods and ensure truck checks pre-shipment.
  • Develop and maintain a Warehouse Management System for layout efficiency.
  • Prepare annual budgets for warehouse and delivery expenses.
  • Oversee inbound and outbound freight; schedule deliveries for high customer satisfaction.
  • Oversee contract hauling; negotiate freight rates.
  • Ensure efficiency and quality of outbound freight and deliveries.
  • Develop and maintain a strong workforce through recruiting, hiring, and training.
  • Maintain ongoing training for operational effectiveness and growth.
  • Monitor and evaluate performance via annual reviews.
  • Approve and submit payroll and handle terminations as needed.

Job description

The Operations Manager's responsibilities are planning, directing, and coordinating the seamless operations of WS Building Materials distribution centers. Ensures and improves the performance, productivity, efficiency, and profitability of departmental and organizational operations, as well as staff management, through the delivery of effective methods and strategies. This position will positively motivate all operations employees by example through strong leadership skills. As an integral part of the divisional management team, the operations manager will participate in department managers’ meetings to positively influence the division's present and future direction.

Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Provide safety training consistently.
  • Formulate suggestions on how to optimize use of organizational resources (for example: Enterprise Resource Planning and Supply Chain Management).
  • Supervise the order fulfillment process by disbursing orders to both the warehouse and yard foreman to ensure 100% accuracy on tally, product, and quality specified by the customer.
  • Inventory management as it relates to operations and the physical movement of products to include but not limited to: receiving, stock rotation, cycle count, yearly physical inventory counts, and damage reduction.
  • Define and support procedural compliance, including, but not limited to: workflow from pick-ticket to signed proof-of-delivery; bill-of-lading to receiver; timecards; trip logs; cycle count information; and all other procedures needed to complete the task.
  • Control cost of the operations in accordance with schedule and budgets.
  • Develop and maintain a quality control program to eliminate damaged goods through loss prevention training and proper storage and ensure all trucks are checked for accurate order filling before shipment.
  • Develop and maintain a Warehouse Management System that efficiently lays out the yard and warehouse space for maximum space efficiency.
  • Prepare annual budget for warehouse and delivery expenses.
  • Oversee all Inbound and Outbound Freight.
  • Schedule deliveries effectively and efficiently to maintain a high level of customer satisfaction.
  • Oversee contract hauling as necessary. Meet with contract haulers on a quarterly basis to ensure world-class delivery services.
  • Negotiate all freight rates.
  • Ensure efficiency and quality of all outbound freight, including route trucks, jobsite delivery trucks, and all specialty deliveries.
  • Develop and maintain a strong and engaged workforce by recruiting, hiring, and effectively training the best talent available.
  • Maintain an ongoing training program to ensure operational effectiveness and employee opportunity for growth.
  • Monitor and evaluate performance via annual reviews.
  • Approve and submit payroll to Human Resources for processing.
  • Conduct terminations according to federal, state, and local laws as well as advice from Human Resources as necessary.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:

Qualifications:
  • B.S degree or equivalent experience.
  • Prefer at least 7 years’ experience in the Lumber & Building Materials Industry.
  • 5 years in a supervisor position with knowledge and experience in organizational effectiveness and operations management.
  • Knowledge of business management, accounting/financial, human resources, and project management principles and practices.
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to lift at least 50 pounds as needed throughout the day.
  • Climb, kneel, reach, or bend throughout the day.
  • Must wear safety gear, such as goggles and gloves, while performing work.
  • Ability to operate all equipment on site as necessary.

Base (per experience): 80-90k per year

Bonus: roughly 15-30k per year
