Job summary

Johnson Controls is seeking an experienced Controls Engineer for the NBAF project in Manhattan, Kansas. You will design, configure and service complete HVAC building control systems and related low-voltage subsystems on-site.

Expect to develop software, wiring diagrams, and submittals to ensure reliable operation and customer satisfaction. You will coordinate with sales, service and subcontractors, perform site-specific training, and uphold safety standards throughout the project lifecycle.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 15 years of relevant experience with a HS diploma, or 8+ years with a Bachelor's in engineering.
  • Knowledge of construction or HVAC industry.
  • Knowledge of control theory, automatic temperature controls, building automation systems and other subsystems.
  • Experience integrating low voltage building subsystems using protocols (LON, BACnet).
  • Ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
  • Strong computer drafting skills.

  • Creates flow diagrams, sequences of operations, BOMs, network layouts and electrical schematics.
  • Develops and tests software programs to operate the system per facility requirements.
  • Coordinates drawings and equipment schedules for submittals and service.
  • Orders and tracks materials for assigned jobs.
  • Assists in loading and commissioning of system and network controllers.
  • Validates system functionality and resolves issues with subcontractors.
  • Produces as-built drawings and software updates.
  • Maintains safety standards on site.

What You Will Do

Under general direction, responsible for the service & repair, design, configuration, and operation of complete HVAC building control systems and other low voltage control sub-systems (i.e., lighting, nurse call, data networks, etc.) to meet the intent of the customers and JCI goals. Accountable for quality, timeliness and efficiency of Service & repair and designs. Develops complex software programs, commissioning and solving to ensure proper operations of the building control system. Provides detailed information and submittals to communicate design and operation to customers, consultants, Sales and Service team and subcontractors.

Note: This position is based at NBAF in Manhattan, Kansas, supporting a single on-site customer.

How You Will Do It
  • Designs, configures and services technically complex building control systems for the customers facility.
  • Creates flow diagrams, sequence of operations, bill of material, network layouts, schedules and electrical schematics as required.
  • Develops and tests software programs necessary to operate the system per customer facility requirements' intent.
  • Coordinates and creates necessary drawings and equipment schedules for submittals, services and/or installation.
  • Selects, orders, and tracks the delivery of materials for assigned jobs.
  • Assists in the loading and commissioning of all system and network-level controllers as required.
  • Assists in validation of complete system functionality and solves problems with subcontractors and other trades to ensure proper operation.
  • Provides field change information to the team for the creation of as-built drawings and software.
  • Keeps management and JCI contractor and customer informed of job progress and issues.
  • Assists in performing site-specific training for owner / operator on the total building control system.
  • Participates in coordination and release meetings with sales and service operations.
  • Performs value engineering to provide cost effective results while maintaining customer satisfaction.
  • May provide work direction to Service Controls Technician I and Senior I and Senior II Controls Technicians.

Required
What we look for
  • A minimum of fifteen (15) years of relevant experience with a High School Diploma (HSD), or a bachelor’s degree in engineering with a minimum of eight (8) years of relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the construction or service, or HVAC industry.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of control theory, automatic temperature controls, building automation systems and other building subsystems.
  • Demonstrated experience in the integration of low voltage building sub-systems using various industry protocols (i.e., LON, BACnet, etc.).
  • Ability to relate technical knowledge to a non-technical audience.
  • Demonstrated advanced computer skills required, particularly computer-related drafting tools.
  • Must be able to pass a federal background check (fingerprint)

HIRING HOURLY RANGE: $36.59 - 50.28 Hourly rate to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data.)
