This is an entry level position. This position is responsible for performing routine manual work usually of a repetitive nature for Capital Region Water’s Wastewater Department. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Operations Supervisor, or other Wastewater Department managers.
EQUIPMENT / JOB LOCATION
Work is performed at the Advanced Wastewater Treatment Facility and at various locations throughout the service area. Work involves the use of brooms, mops, rakes, shovels, hammers, saws, picks, sledgehammers, lawn mowers, tamper, portable mixers, jackhammer, hand roller, trash pumps, chain saw, trimmers, and the occasional use of small power-operated hand tools, 12 ft.- 25 ft. ladders, paint and paint stripper, motor vehicles such as sedans, pick-ups, station wagons, and occasionally one-ton dump truck.
Employees are subject to noise and vibration, fumes, odors, toxic conditions, dust, poor ventilation, and inclement weather. Duties typically are performed weekdays from 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., however, employee may work nights, weekends, emergencies and holidays as required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Work involves, but is not limited to the following: cleans, sweeps, dusts, mops, washes windows on a scaffold or ladder, polishes furniture, lifts liquid containers (up to 70 lbs.), and general custodial duties. Cleans gutters, culverts, sewers, wastewater process tankage, units and equipment, and other drainage structures. Assists facility operators with relocation and setup of portable pumps. Actuates manual valves at the direction of certified facility Operators. Cuts grass, maintains flower beds, rakes leaves, shovels snow, and picks up litter. Assists in loading and unloading of cargo deliveries, usually with the use of a pallet jack or dolly cart. Remains alert and reacts appropriately to audio alarms on vehicular equipment. Completes all job assignments in an efficient, consistent, and timely manner. Maintains regular and predictable attendance. Reports to work and remains at work in a productive condition which includes not being under the influence or impaired by the use of alcohol and/or drugs. Establishes and maintains an effective working relationship with supervisors, co- workers and the general public.
NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Performs other reasonably related duties in equal or lower classification as assigned by supervisory personnel. Performs work as directed by supervisors in accordance with Article XXX, Job Classifications, Section 1 provision of the Basic Labor Agreement.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
• Good knowledge of hand and small power tools.
• Ability to operate hand and small power tools.
• Ability to operate small motor vehicle equipment.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to perform manual work involving dexterity, and often under adverse weather and working conditions.
• Ability to adapt to situations involving repetitive duties and alert with respect to dangers involved with sewer gases, etc.
• Ability to react quickly and appropriately to alarms and hazardous conditions.
QUALIFICATIONS
• High School diploma or equivalent.
• One-year maintenance, construction or related work experience preferred.
• Valid Pennsylvania Driver's License, Class C.
