Operations Coordinator - Encounters/Deserts

The Indianapolis Zoo, a leader in animal conservation and a top tourist destination in Indiana, is located on a 93-acre campus in downtown Indianapolis. We support local and international conservation efforts. We are seeking a passionate individual for the full-time Operations Coordinator of Encounters/Deserts position.

The ideal candidate is committed to the Zoo's mission to protect nature and inspire care for our world. Requirements include at least five (5) years of full-time experience working with birds, reptiles, and/or amphibians in a keeper capacity, and a four-year bachelor's degree in Life Sciences, Zoology, Animal Psychology, or related fields. The role involves training, scheduling, and working closely with the Assistant Curator to manage daily operations.

This is a full-time position (~40 hours/week), with shifts that may vary, including weekends and evenings. Overtime and holiday work may be required.

Responsibilities include:

  • Monitoring animal health and behavior, reporting issues, and maintaining husbandry standards.
  • Assisting with training, enrichment, restraint, and transfer of animals.
  • Managing medical care in coordination with veterinarians and attending vet rounds.
  • Ensuring safety and security for animals, visitors, and staff.
  • Handling daily operations, staff training, and setting a good example.
  • Possessing a valid Indiana driver’s license or ability to obtain one within 30 days.
  • Performing strenuous physical tasks, including lifting up to 100 pounds and navigating uneven terrain.
  • Communicating effectively using radios and phones.
