Overview

The Operations Assistant Supervisor (OAS) is a frontline leadership position responsible for supporting and overseeing daily EMS system operations. This role ensures operational readiness, clinical excellence, and efficient service delivery across all assigned field units. The OAS provides real-time guidance, support, and oversight to field personnel, helps maintain system status management, resource deployment, and continuity of care throughout the shift. This position is suitable for experienced Paramedics stepping into operational leadership while maintaining clinical responsibilities in the field.

Responsibilities
  1. Operational Leadership (35%)
    • Serve as the on-duty operational supervisor for assigned shifts.
    • Provide real-time oversight and support for field operations and EMS personnel.
    • Coordinate daily EMS system operations and maintain system readiness.
    • Manage and implement system status plans to ensure optimal unit coverage and response times.
    • Respond to operational needs with appropriate resource allocation and decision-making.
    • Act as the operational point of contact in the absence of senior leadership.
    • Serve as a liaison between field operations, communications, facilities, and public safety partners.
    • Support operational continuity during high-demand periods, special events, or system disruptions.
  2. Clinical & Field Responsibilities (30%)
    • Perform all duties of a Paramedic in accordance with state and local protocols.
    • Provide direct patient care, assessments, and advanced life support interventions as needed.
    • Support high-acuity calls and assist field crews when additional clinical leadership is required.
    • Ensure accurate, timely, and complete patient care documentation and reports.
    • Maintain all required certifications, licensure, and continuing education requirements.
  3. Personnel Supervision & Development (15%)
    • Provide leadership, guidance, and support to field personnel during assigned shifts.
    • Mentor, coach, and promote professional development among staff.
    • Identify performance concerns and provide constructive feedback in alignment with policy.
    • Encourage accountability, teamwork, and professional growth across field operations.
    • Promote a positive, respectful, and mission-driven work environment.
  4. Equipment, Inventory & System Readiness (10%)
    • Ensure ambulances, response vehicles, and medical equipment are fully operational and stocked.
    • Conduct and oversee vehicle inspections, equipment checks, and supply readiness.
    • Monitor and manage inventory levels of medical supplies and operational equipment.
    • Ensure accurate documentation of supply usage and inventory adjustments.
    • Support operational readiness standards across all assigned units.
  5. Communication & Administrative Functions (5%)
    • Complete and submit required operational reports and shift documentation.
    • Communicate significant operational updates to ensure shift-to-shift continuity.
    • Collaborate with Communications/Dispatch to maintain operational efficiency and coordination.
    • Support implementation of contingency procedures during system disruptions.
    • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism when handling sensitive information.
  6. Customer Service & Professional Standards (5%)
    • Maintain professional communication with staff, patients, partners, and the public.
    • Demonstrate leadership, communication, and conflict-resolution skills.
    • Exercise sound judgment and independent decision-making in dynamic environments.
    • Uphold high standards of professionalism, accountability, and patient-centered care.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Must successfully pass a criminal background check and drug screening per policy.
  • Valid driver’s license with ability to meet insurability requirements.
  • Demonstrated record of reliable, regular, and predictable attendance.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
  • Must successfully complete all required orientation, field training, and onboarding programs.
  • Ability to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Maintain all certifications, licenses, and continuing education requirements throughout employment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate degree or higher in EMS, Healthcare, Public Safety, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum of one year experience as a licensed Paramedic preferred.
  • Experience in interfacility transport operations preferred.
  • Familiarity with EMS software systems including Traumasoft and HealthEMS preferred.
Certifications & Licensure
  • Current Ohio Paramedic certification required.
  • Current CPR certification required.
  • ACLS and PALS certifications required or must be obtained within 30 days of hire.
  • Completion of FEMA IS-100, IS-200, IS-700, and IS-800 required upon hire or per policy.
  • Continued attendance at continuing education to maintain certifications and licensure.
Work Shift & Schedule

The Operations Department functions 24/7. Available shifts include day, evening, overnight, weekend, holiday, overtime, holdover, and callback as needed. Shifts may be 12-hour or 24-hour with rotating or non-rotating assignments depending on staffing needs.
