Job summary

The OR Technician provides essential support in surgical procedures by preparing the patient and operating room, assisting the surgical team, and maintaining sterile environments. This role involves patient positioning, handling surgical instruments, ensuring accurate counts, and aiding in efficient room turnover.

The OR Technician must be available for call coverage including one weeknight and two weekend days per month, and work in a fast-paced surgical environment while maintaining sterile

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• ARC/STSA-accredited OR equivalent OR training with documented evidence is required.
• BLS certification required.

Responsibilities

• Assist in transportation and positioning of patients for procedures.
• Assemble and dismantle surgical tables and instruments before/after procedures.
• Prepare patient and operating room for planned procedures.
• Open sterile supplies and set up sterile field.
• Complete skin prep and draping of the patient.
• Assist surgeon with gowning and gloving.
• Pass instruments and sutures to surgeon during procedures.
• Maintain correct count of instruments, sutures, and sponges.
• Apply dressings post-procedure.
• Identify, collect and care for surgical specimens.
• Decontaminate instruments, supplies and equipment.
• Handle and store instruments properly.
• Support efficient OR turnover for subsequent cases.

The OR Technician plays a critical role in facilitating safe and effective surgical care.

Responsibilities

• Assist in transportation and positioning of patients for surgical procedures.
• Assemble and dismantle surgical tables and instruments before and after procedures.
• Prepare the patient and operating room for planned surgical procedures.
• Open sterile supplies and set up the sterile field for procedures.
• Complete skin preparation and draping of the patient.
• Assist the surgeon with gowning and gloving.
• Pass instruments and sutures to the surgeon during procedures.
• Maintain correct count of instruments, sutures, and sponges throughout procedures.
• Apply dressings and bandages as needed post-procedure.
• Identify, collect, and care for surgical specimens appropriately.
• Decontaminate instruments, supplies, and equipment according to policies and procedures.
• Handle and store instruments, equipment, and supplies properly.
• Support efficient turnover of the operating room to prepare for subsequent cases.

Required Skills & Certifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Graduate of an OR technician program accredited through ARC/STSA, or equivalent on-the-job or military training with documented evidence.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Technical experience of at least 6 months or specialized training for non-certified candidates.

Preferred Skills & Certifications

• Certification as a Surgical Technologist through NBSTSA or NCCT.
• Military experience as a technician, LPN, dental assistant, ophthalmology technician, or medical assistant.

Special Considerations

• Must be available for call coverage including one weeknight and two weekend days per month.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced surgical environment and maintain sterile technique.

Scheduling

• Day shift from 08:00 to 18:30, 4 days per week with rotating days off throughout the week.
