Job summary

Union Hospital in Terre Haute, IN is seeking a combined Secretary/Nursing Assistant for the Operating Room. This full-time, day-shift role supports patient care and OR operations, including transportation, positioning, and procedural assistance.

The position also handles clerical tasks such as answering phones, scheduling cases, and maintaining records. A high school diploma and BLS are required, with Unit Secretary experience preferred.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Unit Secretary course or equivalent preferred.
• Previous Unit Secretary or Ward Clerk experience desirable.
• Knowledge of medical/surgical aseptic techniques and infection control.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) required.

Responsibilities

• Provide courteous and compassionate support to patients, families, and co-workers.
• Assist with patient care, transportation, positioning, and procedures as assigned.
• Maintain patient safety, comfort, confidentiality, and infection-control standards.
• Maintain a clean and safe patient-care environment.
• Assist with Operating Room scheduling and maintain accurate records.
• Answer phones, relay messages, and communicate information appropriately.
• Pull Surgical Records and maintain office supplies and department forms.
• Serve as a liaison between the office, Operating Room, and other departments.
• Prioritize work and communicate with the Charge Nurse and Director/Manager as needed.
• Follow hospital policies and procedures.
• Demonstrate dependability, teamwork, initiative, and professionalism.
• Participate in education and in-service opportunities for continued growth.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent

Unit Secretary course or equivalent

Previous Unit Secretary or Ward Clerk experience desirable
